Is there a thread on him?

Every media outlet is claiming he's verbally agreed to join us, turning down City's contract offer and one from Arsenal too.

I'm happy with this. In fact, you'd be fucking mad to not be happy with this. He's quality, is better than any midfielder we've got, can play anywhere across the midfield, scores, creates, works his bollocks off, and plays from day one.

Anyone unhappy with this?

It is mentioned in a thread elsewhere, but I suppose it does deserve its own.

Like you, I am happy with this for all the same reasons (though he is reportedly set to be given 150k a week. Steep!) However, while in isolation it is a good signing, it won't mean a whole lot unless we deal with the more glaring issues we have. Most notably up front. If we sign Milner, then go on to sign Ings and Benteke, I can see us having a similar season (final position wise) as we have just had. Milner isn't going to fire us up the table. We need to back him up with more quality additions. Quality additions I'm not holding my breath waiting for.

Yep, got to be happy with this. People seem to find him unfashionable to like, his decision making and his end product are unquestionably good and hugely underrated. Really good signing if it comes off.

Starting to look like a seriously bad signing, this. I'll be generous and say £150k a week is only £70k a week over his real value. That's £3.5m a year. Over a (presumed) 4 year contract, that's a premium of £17.5m. Again being conservative, a signing on fee of £2.5m means we'll be paying an effective transfer fee of £20m for a 29 year old James Milner, a player we don't particularly need.

Way way way overpriced.

He's a winner, and we need them. Fucking plenty of them.

Sorry, I shouldve said £14m, was calculating for 5 years.

So a fee of £16.5m. Still silly money IMO

Well he's walked into underperforming, talent filled City sides and given them balance, steel and a bit of decisiveness.

Who's said we are paying him £150k?

He doesn't particularly strike me as a winner. He's not a Roy Keane, say.

He plays like he hates losing, his attitude is seemingly top notch, he knows what it takes to win trophies, and some of his performances that I've seen highlighted his immense leadership. That game last season when we beat them 3-2 at home, he took it upon himself to get City back into that game after half-time - he was magnificent, and actually did something about them being 2-0 down while others farted around.

Maybe we have different definitions of what being a winner or leader is. For me, he's more of a winner than any other player we've got right now.

I will be disappointed if Milner is presented as our "Marquee signing."
It's a smart signing and will be appreciated more once we've supplemented it with top quality in other positions. I have a feeling he will form a great understanding with Henderson.

He's boring.
A boring, bang-average signing.
Every time I see him play I wonder out loud what the point in him is.
Total meh.

He was outstanding when City trounced United 6-1 at Old Trafford about 4 years ago. Seem to remember him setting up a few goals and running riot down the right.

Harsh, very harsh. Milner is actually a very talented footballer - two footed, good passer, intelligent and can hit a ball.

Just because he's James Milner from Yorkshire and there's no apparent swagger about him on and off the pitch doesn't mean he can't play.

There's a lot of negativity floating around the Club at the minute but this would be a great signing imo. I don't think you'd get many Liverpool fans against it.

The way this probably works out is like a better version of that awful joe cole deal.

That means the best we do is get what we paid for. There's no great upside. He has more utility, and he has a better injury record, but he's old. If the deal is long, we'll be his retirement home, and be stuck paying his wages if we can't get rid.

Isn't Milner 29? Could be a few years older, I could be wrong on that.

Delighted with it, because you are absolutely correct. He is twice any mid fielder we've got and that just says it all really.

He's 29 and nothing like the Joe Cole deal.
Milner is seriously underrated on here.

I doubt we're giving 150k a week.
He apparantly turned down a lot more money at City and that offer has been touted around at 165k a week.

But in the end it doesnt matter. He's the type of player we need to build something again.
As Ryan says, he's a winner. Every manager he has praises his attitude and profesionalism.
This club badly needs that.

So m

So much this ^^^^^^

I suggested his signing (as a squad player) a few years back on here and I don't remember it being jumped upon like some great idea. I wonder what's changed more - the perception of Milner or the perception of us?

He's a good player and for me falls into Kuyt category of player - consummate professional, a team player, works hard, tactically aware and is always trusted in the games for all the qualities just mentioned.

The things that concern me is that in a lot of ways he's similar to Henderson and that leaves us with Milner and Henderson as first choice. Has that got the right mix for us? If we need to to complement that midfield with something else, can we get the players we need? And so on.

As said, I think Milner is a good player and if you put aside our circumstances, a good addition who will add competitiveness as everyone has mentioned, but I look at the midfield as a group and I see a lack of class.

The question (and we so often fall into this trap) is not whether Player X is a good player who in isolation seems like a good signing but whether Player X vs other players on the market is a good signing.

If we get Milner, I think we'll need another player for the midfield.

Good player, will play most games, English, scores goals from midfield etc. What more do you want?

I think I remember that, and at the risk of being the 'I always rated him' guy, I'm pretty fucking confident I did always rate him.

I think we do anyway, regardless. Allen hasn't nailed a place and is too capable of one great game and then a handful of average/poor ones, Lucas doesn't look like he'll be here longterm and has had his injury issues in the last few years. We definitely need someone a bit dominant in the middle (Can?). As for Milner and Henderson playing together, their similarity aside, I think the outlook is that both are capable of weighing in with more assists than their positions would naturally dictate, so that's a big asset to have when you have both of them possibly contributing around 8-10 assists a season in the league alone.

Just as an aside, I hear that one of the things we've offered Milner is the captaincy.
