Rafa Benitez sends spies to watch Bilbao midfielder

By ANDY DUNN, 16/05/2009
ATHLETIC BILBAO'S midfield sensation Javi Martinez is a summer target for Liverpool.

The Spain Under-21 star, 20, has a £24million buy-out clause but the Basque club will do business for closer to £12m.

Anfield boss Rafa Benitez has kept an eye on the rangy playmaker's meteoric rise to first-team regular and sent his spies to watch Martinez in Wednesday's 4-1 Spanish Cup final loss to Barcelona.

Rafa is also looking to recruit Shrewsbury No 2 John McMahon for his coaching staff.

He is the brother of Kop legend Steve and has impressed in developing young talent.

from mirror:

Javi Martinez has issued a "come-and-get-me" plea to Liverpool because he is eager to be part of their illustrious history.

The Athletic Bilbao midfielder has been touted as a possible replacement should Xabi Alonso leave Anfield.

Martinez said: "Liverpool are a great team with a great history and any player would like to go there.

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez wants to add some flair to the midfield as he tries to loosen Manchester United's grip on the Premier League.

But Martinez said: "I am absolutely calm, the rumours do not disturb me.

"If I receive an offer, I will deal with it with the club."

Having never seen the player, surely it's a bad sign when the buy out clause is ignored and the price is halved?

Buy out clauses are rarely met. I can only think of Bellamy (Blackburn to us) and Cueler (sp??)(Rangers to Villa) when a buy out clause was activated in recent years but they were for smaller fee's.

But for example Ribery who has a buy out clause of €100million would be sold for less than half that if it came to it.

He looks like a great prospect. He could go on to become an Essien-type. He's big, strong, fast, and has some technique. Everything we wanted Lucas to be. But for the money touted, it doesn't make sense considering our need for a top left winger, a right back and back up forward. If we got that all sorted and had cash to spare, then i'd love to have him (rather than Lucas). But if it means he's a replacement for Xabi, then well, it'd be a massive loss that I wouldn't like to see happen. Part of challenging next year means continuity in the side and building in the summer. Losing a vital of our spine could mean a season of readjustment for certain players. Not ideal in the slightest.

But surely in those cases it's a sign of 'he's ours, back off!', whereas bellamy et al were a pittance in todays market. Javis clause displays intent to keep him, yet they're all of a sudden slashing the price. Something i find offputting for some reason. Curse my mind!

For the 435857698712345698436547th time, all Spanish players have buy out clauses. That doesn't mean they'll reject less than it.

Who said different?

It must be very tempting for spanish players to join Liverpool. Especially uncapped players wanting to participate in the world cup. Arbeloa and Luis Garcia got their first caps while playing for us. Riera got a spot after being cut from the EC Squad. While Alonso has cemented his place in the starting eleven. Reina and Torres were highly rated before they joined.

I guess the only exceptions are Josemi and Nunez.

[/quote]Spanish buy out clauses are always ridiculously high when compared to the final transfer value. Villa is rumoured to have a clause in excess of €100 but is highly unlikely to go for more than £40m, unless City are involved, obv.

Alright miss, calm down.
Fair enough if that's how it's done. I'm not saying we should be careful. I'm saying I find it strange. And i know villa messi etc have stupidly high buy out clauses, and they're not expected to be met. I just thought this was mid range and they might as well try and get more. If he is a talent i mean. So everyone calm down. Ignore my post if you don't i agree. I just thought to voice my opinion.

I'd imagine a club like Bilbao would need the money.

Most good players in Spain have high minimum release clauses, essentially it's so the asking price is still reasonably high should the club enter negotiations with a buyer, which at £12m it is.

The likes of Silva have probably all got extortionate MRC's, it doesn't mean he'll go at anywhere near that price though.

They are 2 very different players I know, but what was the general consensus when we bought Xabi Alonso for £10.5m back in the day?

He was a young highly rated Basque central midfielder who had an excellent season at a mediocre club, as is Javi Martinez right now.

Was Xabi perceived as a "risk"?

He would have been if we were thinking about selling Didi.

Hmmm... he came as one of Rafa's first signings, and most we're already sold up on Benitez being the new Messiah who would turn us into Valencia, so I don't think we had any preconceptions really to be concerned, we hadn't experienced any 'Rafa duds' had we?

I like Martinez and wouldn't mind us spending money on him (although I do think 10M is too much) but it was different with Alonso.

Martinez has been in the business of avoiding relegation with Bilbao. Alonso came to prominence in a team that almost won the title.
