[article]ohn Barnes insists that Liverpool do not need to spend big on bringing “superstar” names to Anfield this summer following the sale of Luis Suárez.
The Reds confirmed the signing of Lazar Markovic from Benfica on Tuesday following the arrivals of Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana and Emre Can.
Liverpool are understood to have as much as £75m in extra transfer funds available after Suárez’s departure to the La Liga side last week.
But Barnes doesn’t believe that Brendan Rodgers needs to spend big on signing household names ahead of next season.
“A lot of people may not have heard of them, very much like Philippe Coutinho, but we don’t necessarily need to buy superstar players,” Barnes told talkSPORT.
“Certain clubs, like Man City and Chelsea, need to sign big superstar players, whereas Brendan Rodgers can fit players into his philosophy and his method.
“They might be players we haven’t heard of and are left thinking, ‘well why is he signing him because he is not a household name’. I am happy with that.” [/article]
