Passed away today. Quite apart from his broadcasting he did a lot for the game itself.

I grew up with him presenting MOTD and always thought he was a bit of a prat TBH, so it's a bit cringey listening to some in the media now trying to make out what a wonderful broadcaster he was.

Even so, Jimmy Hill RIP.

The parody of him in Stella Street was priceless. He had a long, long decline as a broadcaster, culminating in downright dottiness on that Sky show with sundry sports hacks, but he was very inventive during his pomp, and obviously in terms of football as a profession he made a remarkable impact, not just in terms of the wage but also as the man who came up with the idea of three points for a win.

Was he not one of the responsible people for doing work to give players more rights ? I think it was in the 60's or something.

He led the PFA out of the TUC I think. Part of a campaign to get rid of the maximum wage.
I remember him calling for the reintroduction of national service after heysel

One of the great Hill mysteries was his promise of the on-screen gadget to chart the trajectory of, as he put it, 'them Brazilian banana shots'. I remember him turning up during a world cup - 1978? - panting with excitement at this prototype he'd got. He then showed some free kicks and demonstrated how multiple balls would show up on screen to reveal how the ball was bent. Then it was never seen again. My suspicion was that David Colman stamped on it off camera.

Then there was his strange relationship with Terry Venables on the BBC panel, which usually involved him saying something cheerfully and Venables responding with a glare that suggested only Des Lynam's presence between them was going to prevent him from chinning The Chin.

I was going to type my thoughts in but this sums it up nicely. Someone that was very prominent but talked utter shite most of the time. However, he did set the standard of professionalism for MOTD anchor - at that he excelled

I respect his efforts and he was a big part of my footballing childhood. He lost me when Ireland beat England in Euro '88 and he acted like a real Juan Kerr, with a little sprinkling of the old colonial attitude.
