I don’t know how much influence he had over target selection in the summer, however I think what we can all agree on is the balance within the squad is not perfect….any manager would have that same situation.
What he can absolutely be held to account on is how he uses those players to give the most balance from those players available, with a plan on how we can impose ourselves on the opposition.
In my opinion what we’re lacking most is stuff that cannot be taught, tenacity in 50/50’s, desire to work hard doing both aspects of any role, including the defensive hard yards. Strong competitive players who thrive on the contest, not just play for the show casing.
Gakpo drives me batshit, he’s not aggressive enough in the press, 50/50’s and generally getting in players faces and shutting down space. He played with more of those attributes last season up until his injury and was having the best spell at the club.
Mo, to be starting….has to do the dirty work too…be Dirk Kuyt and graft, you don’t win titles with passengers.
Isak, far far too soon to evaluate but by how he played at Newcastle was another forward who likes to stroll and then switch on only when there’s a goal to be had.
This is the antipathy of what made us so successful under Klopp.
That intensity and desire needs to improve significantly, but I’m not sure some of these lads are designed that way.
