Job security - arne

Slot when asked about maybe playing Gomez at RB and playing more defensively: first he said he's been willing to do this as necessary, but said "I don't see us conceding a lot of chances so I don't see a reason for us to change our playing style completely."

One of us is insane.
Palace - 9 shots on target
Brentford - 8
Frankfurt - 1
Man U - 4
Chelsea - 6
Galatasaray - 4
Palace - 7
Southampton - 4
Everton - 2
Atletico - 4
Burnley - 0
Arsenal - 1
Newcastle - 3
Bournemouth - 3

I can’t put my finger on when this bad run started.

Well considering what he started with (compared to someone like klopp who started with utter dross) i'm not surprised.
Indeed but still impressive none the less.

He’s a very good coach who will get us close again this season and I’ll see us as dark horses for the CL.

"I've heard the reports as well about [Slot] being under pressure, but I don't think we play at a club that makes rash decisions," added Van Dijk.

No but the SCM faithful sure as shit do.

I don't know if it was just fresh legs, or being instructed to press, or just more effort under the lights at Anfield (probably all three), but we were playing with increased intensity and some form of recognisable plan in place. Villa did play neatly into our hands, though, so it's a combo of all of the above. I think the adrenaline of these big fixtures may carry us through and mask some issues. We'll know whether this was a sizable blip that can recover from, or whether this season is a write-off, in the weeks that follow.

Ya post City we have a winnable run of games if we can replicate last seasons form.

You lot were wanking yourselves at the thought of binning off Slot.
You’re being a bit disingenuous here. When you’ve lost five out of six, it’s perfectly fair to call Slot out. @binomial might be an extreme case, and most of the others reacted out of frustration.

I initially blamed you, and to some extent, I still do. You’re basically a living, breathing, talking, walking hex. But if we set aside the superstitions and just look at the games themselves, there were some glaring mistakes Slot kept making and failing to fix.

The win against Villa alone isn’t redemption. He needs to put together six or seven wins on the bounce and close the gap with Arsenal before we can believe last season wasn’t a fluke. Winning back-to-back league titles was never my expectation, but a proper challenge is.
We want Slot to succeed, but he needs to show tactical acumen when things are going against him, this season there's been littl;e evidence of that

We are in transition, top 5 and a good crack at the CL while beginning to integrate our next gen and associated tactics will be do fine for this season. We are highly unlikely to string 6 wins together. Thats a silly bar.

What are we transitioning from? We dont have an old squad and we were Champions.
Slot, Edwards and the gang basically decided to throw a monkey wrench into a well working machine. It just needed some oil.

Diaz and Szobo were the oil to the Slot machine. They did all the little things that made the team work.

The spreadsheet boys threw some of the oil away and replaced it with some shiny new cogs.

With so many new signings - big name signings too, who won't expect to start in the reserves - this season was always going to be one of transition. I'd agree one can ask questions about the sheer number of signings we made all at one go, BUT some of our players in that well-oiled machine (Salah, Robbo, poss.even VvD) are defo now starting on the downslope of their careers.

Not to mention Jota died and Trent decided he had had enough as did Diaz.

Ali too has shown injury proneness. We get blasted for not strengthening from a position of power.

We had an old spine/players gone.

We needed/need a rebuild.
Old spine? Who? Van Dijk and Salah?
Who are still guaranteed starters?
The only position we desperately needed to improve on (keyword "desperation") was up front due to Jota passing away and a Donkey.

Why? Didn't we win 7 games at the start of the season on the bounce?

The explanation doesn't need to be any more drastic than a couple of bad decisions combined with some bad luck. It could be more than that but we don't know yet. I think patience is the right way because even the best managers occasionally need it and if we never show it then we'll never really get the benefit of having those great managers in the longer term. Yeah there's a cost involved because often the patience won't be rewarded but for me it's still the best approach overall, for many reasons.
