Why would we sign both Mata and Downing though? I don't think either of them are renowned for any particular versatility either. Actually, I don't think Downing is renowned for anything, so why would sign him if we can get Mata is truly perplexing.
 
Seriously? Both Mata and Downing have played loads on the right. Downing played the entire season there under O'Neill.
 
The difficulty with that is that he wouldn't be getting to the byline, but coming inside and hitting crosses with his left all the time. Not what the doctor ordered really, when it's width we're looking for.

I think this width thing gets way overblown tbh. It really doesn't matter, what really matters is whether your attacking players have enough pace, skill and consistency about them. None of which Downing really has.
 
I don't agree. At various times in recent years we've had plenty of pace and skill in the side, but haven't been able to set it free consistently because we played too constricted a style of football and went through the middle every single time. The Mancs have always set great store by their wingers, admittedly with varying success but it's been a consistent part of how they've set themselves up.

They've always been balanced though and their great sides have generally had players out wide with differing strengths (ie Beckham and Giggs). I agree though, I think you always need that outlet on the flanks, even better if said player is comfortable across the attack, to exploit gaps on the break.
 
I really don't think I've had anyone with pace and skill over the decade, bar Gerrard. Also, when I'm talking about pace and skill, I mean players with the ability to use it while running with the ball rather than when running on to the ball.

Loads of players with pace are often best used when running on to the ball than running with the ball. Prime examples being Torres, Cisse, and Owen, all at their best when they played off the defence's shoulder and when the ball was played into space rather than to their feet.

While it's true we've had our fair share of such players, the difference makers (in terms of giving the side a new dimension) are the ones who really have the ability to use their pace and skill when running with the ball. It's there we've really had no one since McManaman. Bring in a couple of players with that ability and it really doesn't matter if they don't stick out wide all the time.

How good is Mata really though? I've seen only very little of him.

Is he the sort who runs at defenders constantly and scares the shit out of them? Or is he more of a finesse player?

If he's the latter, I don't want him.
