Kolo Toure says no defender’s place is guaranteed at Liverpool - despite their perfect start.

Liverpool’s backline has yet to be breached this season in the Premier League and they have gone 417 minutes without conceding.

Brendan Rodgers beefed up his rearguard on deadline day by signing Mamadou Sakho and Tiago Llori and Toure knows the competition for places is intense.

The former Invincible claims the arrival of Sakho and Llori will benefit the team because no-one can take their place for granted.

“It’s fantastic,” said Toure. “The competition has increased and everybody has to work really hard every day.

“The competition will be really tough and we need to work extra hard. Nobody will be expecting to play, we’ll all have to fight, but I love the competition.

“That’s the only way we can make the team better and I’m glad we have signed two very, very good players.

“We know all about Mamadou Sakho, he is a very good player. Tiago has also come in from Portugal and is a really good defender as well.”

Toure should return from his groin strain for Monday’s trip to Swansea and Martin Skrtel was excellent in the win over Manchester United in his absence.

The Ivory Coast international hopes his vast experience may persuade Rodgers to start him at the Liberty Stadium and he had been impressive before being injured against Notts County in the Capital One Cup.

“I will always bring my experience,” he said. “The competition will be fair and I will help them when they need it. We work as a team, but I will do my best to show the manager I can keep my place.

“I enjoy taking on responsibility. With the experience I have, I can help them and show them the way.”

Toure is not shocked that Liverpool are top of the Premier League for the first time since January 2009 and says it is their reward for all their hard work this summer.

“I’m not surprised because of the effort we put in during pre-season and the commitment of the players every day in training,” he said. “Being top just motivates us even more.

“The manager is doing a great job, all the staff are working really hard. We need to carry on doing that and the results will come.”

Kolo would be a good vice captain if/when Agger is injured or dropped.

I love Kolo.
He'll be vital to our defence this season, whether he's playing in a game or helping out the lads in training.
Great signing. The best example of how a good free transfer can be. And our best since Gary Mac (not too many competitions though!).

I'll be very surprised if he doesn't start against Swansea. He's been our best CB by a mile so far. Skrtel had a great game against manure, but toure has been better. I don't think agger's position is safe. He'll need to stay at the top of his game to keep sakho out.

One of these days some cruel soul will tell Kolo that the universe is expanding and he'll collapse in a sobbing heap, but until then it's delightful to see such a happy chap around the place.

The universe is EXPANDING???

The only thing to leave it to Newcastle fans is the art of leaving after about 65 minutes and still claiming they're the best fans in the land, rather than just a mass of lardy-arsed twat-heads who only have one team to support and so have to channel their innate desire to shout at something before vomiting at one rather than either of two local clubs.

And punching horses.

Meh - I like the toon. They're funny.

I always get an earful of the visiting fans from my seat in the Main Stand, and in my opinion the Newcastle fans are just about the worst. They are far more interested in provoking the Scousers than they are in supporting their crappy team.

I guess each persons experience differs. My best mate is a toon fan and he really likes LFC as well. Neither of us are really match going fans though. I guess being abused by any set of fans can be pretty shit.

Actually on an a different note - I'm making a rare trip up for the West Brom game. I know you and @gkmacca are season ticket holders. If you fellas are up for it I'd love to meet up and buy you a bevvie. Let me know if you're free.

Sounds good! I'll have a word with @Vlads Quiff as we go to the game together. It would probably suit us to meet at the King Harry before the match.

You're right, but the last time I went to Anfield for a game against Newcastle, tons of our own supporters were busy shouting at their supporters, not even watching our game.
Something I really can't fathom.

Yes this. That lovable rogue tag sits uneasy with me. I have been attacked by Newcastle fans on a number of occasions for the crime of being a Liverpool fan. On each occasion they loved the odds of numerous on to one person. The lardy fucking shit houses.

I can't make it to the match, alas, sorry mate, I would've loved to.
