League cup, what's the point?

Why do England persist in having two domestic cup competitions, unlike the other "big" leagues in Europe?
Considering the congested fixture schedule, why not "officially" make the League Cup a reserve cup or just get rid of it?
It just seems redundant despite a guaranteed European spot for the winners and it deprives players of a winter brake.

Look at Suarez he didn't play during December and January and he looks much fresher than the rest of the squad.

Yeah, that's my point. We should make Gerrard, Meireles and the rest go on a biting frenzy in December in order to let them rest until late January.

Seeing that most top flight clubs field 2nd stringers, not sure how much of an impact it will have on the fixture congestion issue. On the other hand, to do away with it will be depriving the lower league teams of a potentially lucrative source of revenue as well as youngsters the chance of first team football/exposure.

I quite like the League Cup. It might not be worth a lot for the bigger clubs but it is at least a competition the average prem teams can still win. It is also a good opportunity to give some of the kids a bit tougher games.

I can understand the significance the League cup had before when there weren't 20 teams in the premiership, qualifiers and group phases in the European cups and like 15 new countries in Europe. There were probably big gaps in the fixture list. However nowadays it's incredibly congested.

Of course teams have adapted. Squads are bigger and players are fitter but it's still basically a rotation of 15-16 players. The players need a rest.

The lower tier teams have the Fa cup.

I don't think the fixture list was that much less congested. The league has always had at least 20 teams (used to be 22), and although we have more European games now, the cups used to have endless replays rather than penalty shoot outs.

I do think there is a place for the league cup actually. Most teams aren't in Europe and its a chance for another team to get in. As a fan of a big club its easy to say it doesn't matter and its not the greatest trophy to win (personally I would be happy if we win any trophy as it happens) but for the smaller clubs its a good opportunity.

I do get where you are coming from with the League Cup actually, but I see the advantages in CAN bring for smaller clubs as outweighing the disadvantages it brings for bigger clubs
