Liverpool winger Sebastian Leto has revealed he is almost certain to move to Panathinaikos in the near future.

The 22-year-old is set to leave the Reds after it was discovered he would have little or no chance of gaining a work permit due to his lack of appearances on Merseyside.

The Argentine only joined the club in the summer of 2007 and spent the entire of last season on loan at Greek side Olympiakos.

The former Lanus youngster admits that he would have preferred to make his move to the Greek champions permanent but the offer never came.

"I am very close to Panathinaikos," he said. "There are negotiations between Panathinaikos and Liverpool and as far as I know the two sides are very close to a deal.

Almost certain

"I think that the possibilities to play at Panathinaikos next season right now are more than 90 per cent.

"I have been waiting for something from Olympiakos all these weeks but they didn't make a move to buy me so far.

"It's not a matter of money. I wanted to stay at Olympiakos but since they don't want to sign me I have to think about my future."

What a waste of time and money he was.

He is big strong and powerful with some excellent skills, granted he failed miserably, but I think he was worth a punt.

He's tall, but strong and powerful? Have you seen him play? To me, it looked fucking obvious from the moment Leto first came here that he would never ever make it. I remember Tim Vickery saying the same thing in his BBC column; he was utterly baffled that we'd signed him. The fact that Olympiakos don't want to keep him after a season's loan suggests he's way below the level we need. It was £2m (plus wages) down the drain.

He had an argument with the coach, but was a regular before that, 34 games with 2 goals for them.

A lanky less skilful version of Milan Baros

Too good for the reserves, too shit for the first-team.

Utter waste of time.

Yeah, I've seen him play a few times. Including a game in the reserves against Utd where he tormented them for the duration of the match. I'd also like to point out that Vickery was the one that rushed to praise Lucas when we signed him, and that Leto was a regular at Olympiakos until he fell out with the coach, which is the biggest contributing factor as to why they don't want to sign him.

I find it hard to understand how people can slag him after basically a handful fo appearances. He may well be shite but fucking hell... give him a go at least.

We've got Riera, so he's not worth the trouble.

for 2m he was, as a young left mid/winger worth a punt, especially as he looks like he will recoup a significant amout of his transfer fee.
