I can't listen to footy on the radio. They make the game sound much more exciting than it is. So it the commentary is shite you know the match really IS fucking dreadful.

So we spent 40m net on players last year ?

Which players would that be then ?
This is the year 08-09 and includes amortisation. That means that any new contracts (including Rafas) are rolled up and paid annually.

I can't remember which mongs we wasted our money on that year tbh but I'm sure google will.
Amortisation is depreciation, it isn't transfer spending. It's a reduction in the estimated value of a player which is depreciated over the length of his contract.

Player A, bought for 10m on a four year deal. After year 1 he's worth 7.5m according to the books. 2.5m being the deprecation figure. That's all that is.

Re: Merged Topics: Club Refinance Thread

Amortisation as a term is being used here to show how we account for player contracts year on year. Player A is bought for 10m and is paid 2 million a year for 5 years, total cost 20m quid. Each year for the next 5 years we place 4m a year in the costs for him, until he's sold in which case we realise the profit.

There's nothing ambiguous about that, it's how LFC accounts.

Re: Merged Topics: Club Refinance Thread

Rosco states that a players value (to the club) depreciates by 2.5 Million each year of his contract, I used the Alonso case to show thats not always the case.

Just as an example in a buying/selling critera.

Here's a little amortisation calculator from deloitte - http://www.iasplus.com/new/amortise.htm

See? It's just a method of rolling up the costs year on year.

Accountants always presume the worst Asbo, they work on the basis that every player is going to leave for free at the end of the contract. If a player is sold for more than his net book value then it's recorded as a profit.

You're counting the salary twice.

Player wages are accounted for in administrative expenses, not amortisation.

Re: Merged Topics: Club Refinance Thread

Well Masch's contract was amortised in total. I remember it at the time. The 18.6 included the full cost of the contract, wages, the lot - and then over the past year Purslow started going on about new contracts for existing staff being rolled up in the same pot as the player movement dosh.

Re: Merged Topics: Club Refinance Thread

That mascherano thing was rubbish anyway.

Here's what the accounts state:

Re: Merged Topics: Club Refinance Thread

The salary point is moot anyways, as they get paid the same every year whatever.

Amortisation means splitting the cost of the player over the term of the contract.
The transfer fee and agent fee, not the wages.

If you were correct the amortisation charge would be the players current wages, plus the cost of the transfer. Given that the wage bill is 100.5m, how do you come out with a figure of 40m ?

It makes absolutely no sense.

Re: Merged Topics: Club Refinance Thread

Look, forget salary as it doesn't matter. The salary gets paid annually anyways, whether in that column or the other column it's an annual cost and that's that.

The purchase price is split annually. It's not depreciation, it's split cost.

No the value of the player is depreciated over time on a straight line basis. It isn't a timescale for payment of transfer fees as you suggest.

But we're never going to agree so this is ultimately pointless.

Re: Merged Topics: Club Refinance Thread

It's not about agreeing it, it's a fact.

We don't pay the money once and then still continue to write it off - that is accounting twice. We account for it over the term of the contract.

Re: Merged Topics: Club Refinance Thread

Liverpool - Amortisation

When Liverpool signs a player we generally know how much has been paid in transfer fees, the figures from www.soccerbase.com are a good source.

The club has to pay the transfer fee to the selling club. In the club accounts it then has to report how much it views each player's worth has declined each year. So for example Aqualini for a reputed £20m on a five year contract costs the club £4m per year. This is what is reported as 'amortisation' in the club accounts. At the end of the contract the player can just leave on a 'free' so he is viewed as potentially no worth to the business after that.
