News of the World: Liverpool ready to swoop for Spurs winger Aaron Lennon
Saturday, June 25th, 2011

First it was Luka Modric, then Sandro and now Aaron Lennon is the latest Tottenham midfielder to be linked with a move from White Hart Lane.

The News of the World claim “Liverpool are ready to swoop for Tottenham winger Aaron Lennon. Kop chief Kenny Dalglish is a huge admirer of the 24-year-old England star and has the cash at his disposal to tempt Spurs into a sale.”

Now whilst Liverpool do need to strengthen their options on the wings, Stewart Downing is tipped to sign as early as the coming week, a move for Lennon does seem a little unlikely.

Martin Hardy in the Sunday tabloid suggests “Spurs boss Redknapp would prefer to hold on to Lennon, but a bid of about £15million would prove difficult to resist.”

Now far be it from us to ridicule a story written by a world famous tabloid, but 15 million pounds for an England international winger, who is just 24 years of age, is just silly talk. Liverpool would have to stump perhaps 10 million pounds more than that figure and are surely better off spending that sort of money on Valencia’s Juan Mata.

The incentive for Lennon to move to Anfield is asserted by Hardy to the fact that he can triple his wages at Liverpool which simply suggests that this article may well have been planted by the representatives of the Spurs winger to improve his salary at White Hart Lane.

And whilst Lennon was not always first choice in 2010/2011 after a sterling campaign the season before. Is Liverpool currently a step up from Tottenham? Both are very much top four chasers next season.

Ultimately, this may well be a new low in this summer’s transfer stories with a totally unplausible rumour simply designed to sell newspapers and attract website visitors.

Is it frowned upon to post NOTW articles here?

Anyway it's probably bull.

He scored the winner against us at WHL last season, but then again the goal was mainly due to a mistake by possibly the worst player i've ever witnessed in a Liverpool shirt, Mr Paul Konchesky.
We actually played pretty well in that game(considering our predicament back then), unlucky to lose.

LIVERPOOL are ready to swoop for Tottenham winger Aaron Lennon.

Kop chief Kenny Dalglish is a huge admirer of the 24-year-old England star and has the cash at his disposal to tempt Spurs into a sale.

Harry Redknapp is desperately fighting to hold on to prize asset Luka Modric, despite the attentions of cash-rich Chelsea.

Spurs are even prepared to let fringe players like Niko Kranjcar, Alan Hutton and Sebastien Bassong leave for nothing to get them off the wage bill.

That would involve writing off almost £20million of signings but, crucially, it would allow White Hart Lane chiefs to put together an improved deal for Modric, who currently picks up about £50,000 a week.

Spurs boss Redknapp would prefer to hold on to Lennon, but a bid of about £15million would prove difficult to resist as he prepares for a season without the huge financial rewards of playing in the Champions League.

Dalglish has cash to splash as he continues his plan to overhaul the Liverpool squad and bring in a major influx of young, hungry British players at its core.

He has already spent more than £50m on Andy Carroll and Jordan Henderson and wants Aston Villa wide man Stewart Downing.

But Downing is now considering handing in a transfer request after Villa refused to drop their £19m asking price.

The Midlanders' hard-line approach has forced Dalglish to switch his sights for Lennon. And the Kop boss believes his direct running style could have a major impact at Anfield.

Lennon still has three years left on his existing deal with Spurs but knows a move to Anfield could double his salary.

Liverpool are also expected to complete the signing of Blackpool's midfield playmaker Charlie Adam this week for about £10m.

Dalglish is hoping he can create a new spirit at Liverpool from the cream of domestic talent and believes it can push his side to the brink of a Champions League place.

And Redknapp is aware there will be another side challenging for a top four place next season, which has increased his desire to hold on to Modric.

Chelsea are ready to go as high as £32m, almost double what Spurs paid for the Croat just three years ago.

And Sir Alex Ferguson has privately revealed that Modric will be one of the players on his Manchester United shopping list even after keeper David de Gea completes his move from Atletico Madrid.

man , i'm so desperate for some pace in the squad that i'm slightly tempted by this tooler . yeah , yeah, pace isn't everything but fuck me there's nothing better than seeing a fullback being left for dead and a winger setting up a goal . Pace thrills, and for too long we've had the pace of my gran ....and she's been dead 8 years !!

He improved his delivery a few seasons ago and I thought he might push on and become a special player, but that turned out to be just a decent run of form and not an upturn in his level.

Ignore Lennon and sign Mata.

His delivery is still better than it once was, but I agree he hasn't made the overall progress he should have made.

I enjoy watching Lennon but he hasn't improved much and for the quoted fee I'd prefer Mata!

Indeed. Let's hope the press reports are right in that regard, especially if it's true that Ferguson's trying to poke his raspberry nose in as well.

If Arsenal or United or in for Mata then I think he will go to one of those clubs ahead of us.

We'd have to put out a pretty impressive pitch to get him playing for us.

Depressing.
