Liverpool have agreed an £8m fee for AZ Alkmaar's Swedish midfielder Rasmus Elm, 24.

The Reds have also joined the list of clubs showing interest in Montpellier striker Olivier Giroud, 25, with manager Kenny Dalglish attending the French club's win at Toulouse on Friday. Arsenal are also believed to be keen on signing him.
Full story: Daily Mail
The Anfield club will also have to find at least £12.5m if they are serious about signing FC Twente's Dutch international striker Luuk de Jong.

Elm for 8 million? Are we going for squad players when we already did that last summer?

I've removed the source of that though.

we didn't buy squad players last year , we bought premium british talent that will be the backbone of the team as we fight it out for 7th place each year .

It's just a story and one of dozens that will claim we've 'agreed' to sign someone, so making assumptions about what or who and why is going waaaaaaaaay overboard..

Is it just me who finds all transfer talk at this point pretty much pointless? We probably won't sign anyone for about another 2-3 months at least and anything in the press at the minute is just column filling.

This one looks like it might have legs..

Adam replacement no doubt ?????... Dead ball specialist...

However apparently he lacks quick thinking and pace on the ball. When he gets in possession and there isn't an opportunity to hit it long forward to the striker he simply takes to much time and slows down the game. Lacks control over the ball as you would expect. Has really good crosses, corners and set pieces though...

I wouldn't complain if we only signed wide players this summer, that's how desperate we are (and have been for years) for width.

I'd sign Hoillet (about £6m) and Vaz Te* (if West ham don't get promoted) along with 2 top wide players like Hazard (and a.n.other widely touted wide man) for £40m.

A total spend of £50m and given that Hoillet and Vaz Te can both play as a second striker as well which creates all sorts of interesting team selections that would make us as good going forward as we are defensively.

United have Nani, Valencia, Giggs & Young as wide players and rotate regularly and we should have similar (only better options).

*It's hard to put a value on Vaz Te because West ham only paid £500,000 for him less 6 months ago BUT he is finally realising his true potential. I always thought he's go onto be a much better player than N'Zogbia, Downing, etc and finally he looks like he's got his act together. Maybe worth a £4m offer if West Ham don't go up.

I thought Hoilett was out of contract this summer, we won't need to pay that much for him, will we? 😉

I'm not sure how it will play out but if you can gaurantee there will be several clubs in for him and we will have to pay some sort of signing fee.

The tribunal fee mentioned is 3 mill I think.

According to Tony Barrett we're after Susaeta. Looks a cracking player.

Susaeta is a cracking name and i'm for signing im on that alone, however 15 goals in 151 appearances is a little, well, Downing.

Goals are an extra in a winger - a very nice extra, admittedly, but his main job would be to lay them on for others. If Downing had been skinning fullbacks and laying on loads of chances, I for one wouldn't worry about a low goals tally.

Not these days they're not. Wide players are expected to chip in with goals.

We are already a team with not enough goalscorers and too high a burden placed on the strikers to score. We need to spread the goals around the team.

there seems to be a mental block with our team scoring goals. downing wasn't great a getting goals but he got a decent number at villa, caroll got a decent number at newcastle and suarez filled his boots at ajax.

I don't think we're really disagreeing here. All I'm saying is that goals are not no.1 priority in a wide player.

When it's been happening so consistently for quite a while, you have to question the coaching.

Apperantly our scouts are once again watching Montpellier tonight.

On a side note, Ballague has just said Sahin and Lass have been Made available for transfers. I'd sign both!

we can probably get him for 5-6 million ... would be an excellent pick up. Not as sure about Lass - he's quality but where would he play? Ahead of Wonderman?

sahin just the type of player we need, though we probably wont be interested.

I remember a few seasons ago when Robben and Snieder left RM, not for big money (relatively either) we should be all over these ***Real rejects***

Yeah I'm pretty cynical about our transfer dealings too. Sahin would be great but we'll probably end up spending £15 million on Lee Catermole or someone else shit.

I really hope we don't sign Hoillet, he is garbage I don't get why some people rate him. Its not like he's being raved about week in week out. Seriously there is a reason why we are in this position and it is because we sign average dross which hoilett appears to be.

Sahin is available????? Get all over that shit. Sign lass if the price is right!

Same with krasic

Sahin , Lass , Krasic .....all potentially decent signings that might be available cheaper than in previous times and who one would imagine would regain form when played and improve our team . Every year a few players like this pop up and it pisses me off how we never go for them . Van Der Vaart would be the perfect example of what i am talking about .

So who are the other 'smart' signings that could be made ? I'd like for us to go after Granero , maybe even try and steal Adebayor if wages and price weren't too bad . Ba ? Who else is there ?

Flamini, Diego...

ah yeah Diego is meant to have had a decent season with A.Madrid . Maybe we should get Simeone in also and he can bring him .

Afellay, potentially Jovetic who Modo mentioned, as Fiorentina are languishing a bit this year.

Get some Germans in before they win the Euro's and their value increases.

It will be hard to prize any of the Munich players away though.
