For me Gerrard and lucas are doing well, but one needs to decide to move in to the space that Coutinho and sterling are making. We're relying on fullbacks running up or a wonder pass from lovren or Skrtel

Yeah, I get that as well. We have two of them sitting deep yet the midfield doesn't appear that protected.
Exactly. Well I think Lucas has done well defensively Gerrard less so.

Very optimistic about second half.
I think this half was all about start of the season nerves and we got it out of the way with a lead to boot.
Soton came very prepared to take advantage of our weakness and play to frustrate us and did it well and considering we didn't concede and are leading this has played out well.
Think this second half will see our play come to life as nerves begin to let go and the likes of Manquillo get some confidence and Coutinho get more involved.

Coutinho sterling and henderson are not getting the ball at their feet. Defense is bypassing the midfield making us look pretty gentle in attack.
Finally someone said what I've been thinking. Coutinho needs a bit of help in the middle; I'd actually like to see Henderson pulled back into the middle in place of Lucas, and perhaps Ibe introduced on the right (or Allen introduced on the left with Sterling switching over to the right, and also to give Manquillo some help). That said, I don't think Lucas has played badly; it's just that we don't need both him and Gerrard out there together, especially with Gerrard now only used in the deep pivot position.
The game is definitely running through Coutinho a lot more than through Gerrard. Its nice to see us move the ball forward quickly but, as Fabs said, one of Stevie or Lucas needs to get forward into those spaces. We are a little too static as a result and have not been able to get Sturridge much into the game.

Oh, and Lovren is boss and Sterling is showing why he can be our striker if Sturridge isn't available. 🙂

Johnson -7- done very well down the left, wish he'd stop shooting from 30m out though
Lovren -7- smart, tight on attackers when in his space, excellent passing

Manquillo - 6.5 - one back pass awry otherwise firm in the tackle and pacey, decent start to his LFC career
Lucas - 6.5 - surprised, he has got forward far more than anticipated and played some nice forward passes. Wish he'd stop those damn petty tackles/pushes though
Gerrard - 6.5 - time, class, a couple of fine passes, needs to do more though
Coutinho - 6 - just starting to come into the game after a very slow start, needs to go at them more
Henderson - 8- fantastic retention and pass aside he's been key, fast to close them down and piling the pressure on, winning more than his fair share
Sterling - 7 - superb finish, however picking the ball up with his back to the goal, and dropping deep into midfield, far too often

Its a new system that we will have to get used to, Sturridge is on his own with the 3 runners behind him in support. Im not sure its the system that will get the best out of Sturridge but it will probably suit the likes of Sterling Coutinho and Lallana
Agree and I dont think Sturridge will score nearly as much this season. But so long as he doesnt get frustrated and buys into his role I think the team will do well and is currently the best approach with our personnel.
Lucas looks like he is carrying a knock...
