Liverpool vs Southampton

We need another striker, and we need to play 4-4-2 diamond more often. Lambert won us the game today.

Southampton were well organised and incisive on the ball.

We weren't either but came away with 3 points. That'll do for now.

3 points that we were lucky to get. Gerrard and Lucas don't play well together - one or the other should play, not both.

Good cameo from Allen.

Sterling had a very good game, as did Mignolet who made a great save on Schneiderlin.

there was so much wrong about that game but it's the season opener and we won so probably not worth saying too much . Except i hope we don't see lucas and gerrard in there again , they were fucking useless . Does Can have a knock cause he surely would have added more .

Yeah. Sturridge had a lot more space with him on. I don't think he's of the right mould to play as a disciplined lone striker.

Lucas is wank.

Gerrard still looks dodgy passing across the back four.

I want Ricky to score one soon.

Fantastic 3 points, all things considered. Good start from Lovren as well. His distribution was excellent. Some of his long passes in the first half were Gerrardesque. Assured in defence, too. He'll prove to be our best signing of the summer.

He is, quite possibly, the slowest striker in the premiership on this showing.

Genuinely concerned at his lack of mobility, he looked a mile off the pace of our attack. Mind you Gerrard never moved faster than a stroll all day so it may be related to our preseason regime, we looked well short of fitness for the first 4 games last season aswell

Allen has to replace Lucas

I hope the first time we look comfortable in a match Rodgers takes Gerrard off just to lay down that he's not going to play every minute of every match and give his teammates some experience of being on the pitch without him.

Only deserved a point there. Southampton were excellent.

Huge Emre Can shaped hole in our midfield.

Lucas, Johnson, Gerrard and Skrtel were poor.

Manquillo is positionally suspect, but had an alright game overall.

Coutinho had a shocker, but was targeted with high pressing.

Thank fuck for Sterling. 1 goal. 1 very good assist. Could have lost today without him.

Well we began last season by desperately hanging on to three points? Not much has changed.

I'm concerned that we haven't yet replaced Suarez's invention in the team. But none of the replacements actually played in this game, so this is not the time to be alarmed about that, and we may yet buy another striker. I'm hoping Lallana can be the answer in games like this when Coutinho is nullified. Lazar will not come in to the squad until later into the season probably...giving him time to bed in.

But my take away from this game is this.
  • Manquillo is good.
  • Lucas and Johnson cannot start for us anymore. If they do, we are in trouble.

We got lucky. Southampton were better than us at times during the game. Lucas and Gerrard ultimately did nothing.
Best player, Sterling.
Lovren not far behind.

Yep. All last season I banged on about the fact we looked similar to how Rafa trained them when he focused on getting top performance for the last couple of months of the season, & that 11 game run proved it, just the fact we had a small squad cost us.

Provided we can get the 3 points as we do it, sluggish for the first few games is worth it if we finish as strong.

Oh for god's sake calm down some of you. We had a very shaky start first game last season, followed by several games when we ran out of gas at half time. Calm down! And Lambert proved he can play in the premier league last season, he proved he can play at international level last season, so cut the guy some slack!

What's happened to Flannagan?

Is he injured?

I don't understand how Johnson is starting on the left ahead of Flannagan.

Made hard work of it and harsh result for Southampton. I thought we looked really tired in the second half especially when it came to tracking back to defend their counter attacks. I suppose we can put that down to the guys' conditioning and we'll get better over the course of the game.

We pressed harder than them in the first half while they seemed happy to let us have the ball during that time when we were knocking it about amongst the back four and Gerrard / Lucas. We looked like we had heavy legs after the break and then suddenly they looked like they had thrusters strapped to their heels.

Glad we came away with 3 points today. The performances can come later as the players' bodies get back to their top playing condition. In the meantime, we need to make sure we pick up points like we did today while the performances aren't there yet.

Not our best game, that's for sure. We couldn't have really complained if we drew that, but a win is a win and I'll take them anyway we can get them - people talking before the game about battering southampton, yeah right.
I don't think anyone was faultless, thought migs and lovren were good, sterling and sturridge quiet, lucas gash as per. Thought Allen did well when he came on. Not sure what the point in Lambert is unless we're planning on playing a long ball or resorting to hit and hope crosses.
Hopefully we'll have some more forward options for next weekends game.
