KENNY DALGLISH insists that Liverpool will continue to conduct their summer transfer business in the appropriate manner – despite a host of names being linked with a move to Anfield.

Liverpool have already secured one close-season signing, that of Sunderland midfielder Jordan Henderson in a £16m deal last month, and

have been rumoured to be in the hunt for a number of other high-profile targets.

Blackpool midfielder Charlie Adam has been persistently linked, as has Aston Villa winger Stewart Downing and Newcastle full-back Jose Enrique, with several squad players expected to depart as Dalglish looks to reshape a squad that finished sixth in last season’s Premier League.

But the Scot insists that any transfer dealings at Anfield will take place behind closed doors, and that he will continue to refuse to comment on speculation.

“I wouldn’t mention anyone as a target for us,” said Dalglish “We are obviously trying to bring people in and people are trying to take players from us.

“But we are not going to speculate and be disrespectful and talk about other people at other clubs. Every manager I’ve seen interviewed on television has said exactly the same thing. That’s the way it should be.”

Dalglish will welcome captain Steven Gerrard back for pre-season training today. The midfielder has been absent since the beginning of March with a groin complaint, which eventually required surgery.

Gerrard admitted recently that he is desperate to get back playing again, and his manager says the 31-year-old has been making excellent progress in his recovery.

“We start back Monday so we’ll see how everybody is then,” added Dalglish.

“Everything that has been done has been very positive for Steven so we are just hoping for the best for him.

“He deserves a bit of luck on the injury front. We won’t put him under any undue pressure. All we’ll say is that everything has been fantastic so far.”

Meanwhile, Roma goalkeeper Alexander Doni’s £1m move to Liverpool could be back on.

Doni, 31, had been expected to make the switch to Anfield last month, only to see the transfer break down.

But the Brazilian’s agent, Ovidio Colucci, says the deal could be resurrected this week.

“At the moment there’s no news on the situation of Doni,” he said. “The hypothesis of Liverpool is still possible. Towards the middle of next week we will know more, since I scheduled a meeting with the leadership of Roma.”

Elsewhere, Liverpool yesterday appointed Kevin Keen as first-team coach.

Yeah, Fred Messi, his cousin from Toxteth.

I'd rather bring in a back up keeper who is more locally based.

Ditto, and someone young at that.

What's the point of paying someone a fair amount of cash to warm the bench?

I don't think we'll be flying him over every time we need him, I'm sure he'll move.

I reckon Gulasci would be just as able as Doni though.

Maybe so, but we'll have a keeper on the bench who has never had the experience of playing top flight football week in, week out.

You want someone experienced who is reasonably happy to sit on the bench not some youngster wasting his career away and never being able to actually prove he'd be able to step up if called upon.

Getting a good back up keeper is not easy. You won't get many really good keepers who are happy to sit on the bench, even if they are experienced.

A while back I posted a list of all the keepers we have had over the last 20 years. It was absurd, and suggests that whatever the correct way is, we have not been doing it!

I see the argument against an experienced keeper but is that just fear? If a keeper is experienced but clearly is not really wanted by another club to be their number one does that make them any better in an emergency?

I can't recall too many times when a keeper for a top side has been injured for a long time. The only times that spring to mind are when Arsenal had to resort to the completely untried Stuart Taylor, and they still won the league, and when Chelsea had a choice between Hilario and Cudicini in 2006/07, and did not win the league.

Not a big enough sample to draw any conclusions of course

Speaking of back-up keepers, would anyone want Dudek back to sit on the bench? Real have released him so he'd be available on a free and he should better than Doni (who everyone says is shit). Leeds are apparently interested in him though.

would love him back

Not everyone says Doni's shit. My Serie A sources (Juve fans who make it to some home games in person) tell me they wouldn't want Doni as first choice but would be quite happy with him as a stand-in.

That said, if The Dude can still perform at a high enough level to be our no.2 and is happy to accept that, I'd be delighted to fetch him back.

That's a relief.

Who is more likely to be content with backing up a 'keeper as good as Reina and therefore watching almost every game from the bench? A player who is based in England with his family nearby or a stopper who probably doesn't speak English, doesn't know the culture and is 6000 miles from his homeland?

What is in it for these players too?

They must only be there for the money. I'd rather have a young player who can learn whilst being understudy to Reina, with a view to maybe taking over from him in the long term or at the very least getting a move to another club.

These guys who have had their day and just seeing out their careers by sitting on our bench don't really appeal too much to be honest.
