Liverpool FC have received no approaches for Lucas Leiva but the long-serving midfielder's future at the club remains uncertain.

The Brazil international slipped down the pecking order last season and the summer acquisition of German midfielder Emre Can has further increased competition for places.

The Reds are prepared to listen to offers for the 27-year-old but so far none have been forthcoming.
Lucas has been linked with a move to Italy and a reunion with former Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez at Napoli.
However, the ECHO understands that the Serie A outfit currently have no plans to table a bid to sign him this summer.

They would be interested in taking him on a season-long loan but they believe it's unlikely Liverpool would agree to a temporary switch.

Lucas spent two months on the sidelines after suffering knee ligament damage back in January and on his return he found his opportunities limited.

Brendan Rodgers' decision to switch to playing with just one holding midfielder left Lucas having to settle for bench duty with skipper Steven Gerrard operating in the deep lying role in front of the back four.

His lack of action contributed to him suffering the bitter disappointment of being overlooked by Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari for the World Cup in his homeland.

Speculation about Lucas' future has grown since fans noticed that he had removed any mention of Liverpool FC from his profile on Twitter. However, sources close to the player insist that change was made six months ago.

Lucas, who was back at Melwood for the start of pre-season training on Monday, has made 243 appearances for the Reds since his £5million switch from Gremio in 2007.

Pepe Reina remains available for transfer as the Spanish keeper prepares to return to Merseyside later this month.

The shot-stopper spent last season on loan at Napoli but the Italians have no intention of making the move permanent.

With Simon Mignolet now established as Liverpool's No 1, the Reds are keen to get Reina's £110,000 per week salary off the wage bill.

Back in February Rodgers effectively ruled out any possibility of an Anfield comeback for the 31-year-old, citing the open letter Reina wrote to fans last summer as his “goodbye”.

The Reds hope to off-load Reina and bring in a younger keeper to provide competition for Mignolet and Brad Jones.

Liverpool remain on course to complete the £25million transfer of Benfica winger Lazar Markovic by the end of this week.

The Serbian youngster is expected on Merseyside to undergo a medical either Thursday or Friday.

No takers for Lucas?

But how is this possible?
Haha. Beat me to it.

I've said before that if he was up for sale, there'd be no takers for him in the upper echelons of the Premier League. Italy would probably suit him better in fairness. It's a pity everyone except RAWK, Rafa and Ryan knows he's shit.

I'm happy to quote other articles out there that suggest Inter Milan and Napoli are interested in him if you like?

Inter are about to sign Medel and M'Vila. Doubt they'll be going for him.

I'm not shocked by the lack of interest.

Not quite the scramble you'd expect for such a prodigious talent, is it?

Inter Milan & Napoli? We're not talking about fucking Hull City here Del, they're two of the best sides in Italy.

Not that it matters. Who in your "upper echelons of the Premier League" came in for Nemanja Vidic when he became available a few months back? Or Ashley Cole? Or Arshavin? Or Daniel Sturridge? Or Essien? Or Stam? Would you like me to keep going?

Inter haven't been one of the top sides in Italy for a few years, they're shite and bizarrely in free fall. 18 points off a CL place and scraped in to the Europe league by 2 points.

Napoli I'll give you though.

Fill your boots mate!

For the most part you've named a bunch of aging (or in Arshavin's case, failing) stars who were actively seeking moves away from the Premier League. And Daniel Sturridge was a young player who had yet to prove himself. Hardly comparable to Lucas who is a seasoned pro and by now, should be a known quantity to anyone who's interested. And of course he is, which is precisely why there's so little interest.

I wish him well anyway, he's a good likeable lad, he's just not that great a player and he's proven to be fairly one dimensional. And as pointed out, it was more or less proven this season that he wasn't "essential" to the way we play, not that we don't need someone of that ilk as an option, but we managed fairly well without him and neglecting that bit of defensive solidity saw us murder a load of teams in the process.

Napoli I'll give you though.

Napoli are interested because of Rafa no?

Reina is probably financial ...

Agger ... well ... you think he sucks, so that explains it ... no? 🙂

Reina and Agger have had plenty of interest over the years though. Barca, Arsenal and City etc.
Lucas have been cuorted by Stoke and Palermo if I remember correctly.

Its all irrelevant though. He isnt good enough for a team that wants to challenge at the top in the Premier League.
Italy could suit him pretty well.

Always been a good lad though and I wish him the best if he leaves.

Surprised that Napoli cannot afford Reina. Aren't they minted, after selling one of their strikers last season (Falcao I think)?

he's a very good player in the holding role, the problem is it looks like gerrard is going to be in that position whenever possible, lucas looks a bit shit in any other position but to be fair he was pushed into that role by rafa and has been focusing on it ever since, id like to keep him and play gerrard as one of the 2 in front but it wont happen

I've never been bothered either way about Lucas. I find the gloating by his long-term haters a bit much, though, seeing as though he has never really come back from his injury in 2011. He really had improved an awful lot to that point, and perfectly reasonable people were talking about his as one of the best DMs in the league.

I'm not sure his critics have been proved right. I think they just got lucky that he suffered such a bad injury, and that they should probably acknowledge that part of the story before they start crowing.

Yeah the injury made him lose enough pace that he's no longer effective for 90 minutes anymore.

He's a squad option at best but if he's in the way of Can progressing he'll be sold

Does have CL experience though
