I wouldn't argue with the Ilori signing, that looks a potential bargain, and worst case scenario is £3-4m dropped.
I thought Alberto was a bit of an odd choice at the time, but reasoned that so long as he was an upgrade on Shelvey for similar money, then it just about made sense. But he hasn't met that minimum standard so far.
hope you're right about illori. suppose the signings help with 'competition' in the squad, keeping people on their toes, but on the other hand you hope that youth players (sinclair, wilson, coady, rossiter, wisdom) can perform that function and instead 20m+ can be used to sign a major player.
For my money - Alberto will eventually slot in to the midfield in the rolls Henderson & Allen gave been playing (and Coutinho to a certain extent).

At the moment, that seems pretty much on the money. But what would have happened to shelvey if he was getting as many games as alberto.
I too, would have preferred a couple of clear first-team-ready signings - and trust the youth to fill in the gaps. But I would not write off any of these players. Illori, I think, is an excellent talent, and I'm delighted we have him. First-team player in a couple of seasons. Alberto, again in my opinion, is a more classy player than Shelvey. Things have not yet worked out or him - and the signing does look a little dubious now Teixeira is stepping up and with Suso to return. Borini is proving himself this season, and may be our third striker next season. As for Aspas, that one is frustrating. I thought we'd see more. Hi attitude is good, and hopefully it will turn for him, but its less hopeful than the others.
We shouldn't judge him until we see him in a red shirt - that was argued last summer and the same people can make the same argument now if they wish.

Well, Wisdom leapfrogged Flanagan, so there's a precedent there. And Ibe leapfrogged Teixeira himself in getting onto the bench for games and getting minutes as well. In past seasons, under other managers, you'd be pretty sure these signs would've pointed to the player getting leapt over being on his way out, but things seem different under Rodgers.
Unless his attitude has been shit, he'll get his chance again. I suspect he hasn't improved as quickly as needed. Others getting ahead of him on merit doesn't necessarily have to mean he's on his way out.
