Making ourselves look like mugs?

So tranfer season is in full swing and its the usual farcical fairground ride as is normal.....

Since January we seem to have altered our policy, deciding we are going to spend serious money on up & coming talent. Carroll for 35 mill & Henderson for 16-20 mill our initial examples.

These transfers have ultimately set a president for this club, is anyone else wondering if blowing around 50 million on 2 players who only have 3 seasons Premiership experience was a good idea? Not only that but have we made ourselves look complete mugs paying crazy money for players that arent worth it?

Then there is the Clichy deal, I thought we were going to tie this one up only for Man City to jump in on us, fair enough I suspect City offered him silly wages. But why would any player want to go to Man City over us? Really has football really gone that mad?

Then this morning I see we are trying to hijack City bid for some player from Montenegro who Ive never heard of, I guess in a vain attempt to stitch them up.... but its probably made fuck all difference thus making us look desperate once again..... Same could be said with the Phil Jones thing....

I just sit here wondering are we starting to look like we are trying to play with the big boys but when we go home for tea they are ripping the piss out of us.....

All in all, we need to make sure we get CL next season or we are fucked as far as I can see.....

Fucks sake. It's been abaa five minutes since the window opened. Have a cup of tea an a sit down before you fall down lad.

If Chelsea or utd had spent 70m on henderson, suarez and carroll, it'd be them spending big for big players. Some would call Carroll and he Henderson the future of the England setup too.

We do it and it's a shambles. So basically if we get 5 players for £30m were buying dross and if we get 3 for 70m, were mugs...

It's Lose/lose

Maybe you should be in charge of transfers and show the club how it should be done.

Oh and I suppose fergie is off his rocker spending £16m on jones too?

I'm not going to....the big boys are waiting to laugh behind my back.

Im not pissed off, just think we couldve played it a bit better..... just think weve made ourselves look a little foolish so far.

Rafa's reign, you could argue, was somewhat of a honeymoon period. Always in the top 4 and constantly being a menace in the CL.
We're in limbo right now, somewhere between premier league challengers and top 6 team.
Its not like we havent been here before and got out of it. Things are looking positive. We do need to start being shrewd in the transfer market, though and I still reckon that we can beat the best teams in Europe on any given day.
Its not as dire as you are making it look.

Im not worried about the players as such, more the fact we seem to get shafted for players the likes of Utd, Chelsea etc wouldnt even touch....

Yeah United paid over the odds for Phil Jones admittedly, but paid less for Young when we paid more for Henderson.....

Based on what though? We'll look foolish if they fail and look great if they go on to be England internationals for years to come. Shit happens. United spunked £30m on Ferdinand who was cultured but renowned for being error prone, people raised their eyebrows back then, mainly because of the fee and that was years ago now.

Like Hardcastle said, we can't win. If we buy a load of low priced stop gaps we're failing to be ambitious and if we show ambition financially then we're being naive. We signed Suarez who is top European quality, the kind everyone wants, but not every player can be of that ilk and in our current predicament, not every player we can attract will be like that either.

Let's just sit back and see how it goes, this is about as excited as I've been about a Liverpool side in a long time and that's because it feels like we're getting some sort of identity back.

I've been majorly downbeat about Downing...but to be fair, he is not far off from Young and(whatziface the winger they signed last year from Wigan?) in terms of quality. He may even be better in some respects cuz he is left footed and a genuine left winger. Which is the rarer commodity. Young plays on the left, but is right footed and he cuts inside a lot more....

No body here is laughing at United for buying shit...yet.

Not being funny but what's that based on mate?

Take it a lot of it's down to Kenny coming back who is Mr Liverpool, fair enough. However i honestly don't understand why people are excited about the future as a Liverpool fan until we're back up challenging and/or in the Champions League. It's what LFC are all about.

I was somewhat bemused when many Liverpool fans were saying how great NESV/FSG(whatever they're called) are for buying Carroll and Suarez but that wasn't their own money...they reinvested the Torres money which was a positive but i'll reserve judgement on these owners until the end of the transfer window.

The pressure's on them, they talk a good game, lets see if they play one.

Thats true enough, I certainly raised eyebrows when utd bought Valencia from Wigan. But he has definately improved. Downing is a good player yes, but is he 20 million? Hmm I guess you pay for the experience rather than the talent when buying British.

Although it is refreshing to see us splashing the cash, it is also very scary to think what if? Agreed Dalglish is a god send, but lets not count our chickens just yet, a lot of very very hard work is still to come to get back to where we need to be, and the chances of winning the league diminish further and further each year the twats at united / chelsea / city keep spending and spending. Yeah we are doing the right thing, its better to take a risk than not at all, but then the risk failure is also larger.... I guess Ive just seen too many false dawns to be too confident once again during a transfer window.

I guess the old adage is that a team can be better than the sum of its parts..... I for one wouldnt mind Downing, he reminds me a little of Heighway in a weird way....

Could this not have gone into one of the 157 threads moaning about how shite the first month and 5 days of the transfer window has been?

Based on Kenny partly, but the fact that for the first time in ages we've got players coming through, many of whom are homegrown or have at least been here a couple of years. A team that's getting more and more players who look like they're willing to put up a fight for the team, proven none more so than in how much we've got by without the influence of Gerrard for the first time in I can remember. It's not about the money and it's not about the owners willingness to put money in, it's the fact that we seem a steadier ship than we have in a longtime and we're becoming less and less public about all the things that should be done behind closed doors.

Yeah we need to build, but considering the above, what's there not to be optimistic about? You seem ready to poor scorn on anything positive.

I share your optimism actually.

But didn't H&G have good rapport and reputation with the fans in the first year?

The only difference (and it is a big whopper of a difference) is that we are not leveraged as we were then.

Time to log off and hibernate until the transfer window closes.

I think you're not far wrong .... the loonies are on the loose. Best come back when the window closes .... wonder what people will be saying then

This is the sad truth about not being in the CL, it's where established players want to be, we can show all the interest we want , but if United, Chelsea or City come calling it is difficult for us to compete.
That my friends is why in the short term at least we have to look at the Downings and Adams of this world and hop that we can form a competitive team, rather than a collection of superstars who may not gel. In doing this the, replacing players with better ones the team will improve, maybe not with the same rapidity as we would like, but progress is progress
There are too many people deluding themselves on here, and think that the worlds top players look at the club the way we all do as fans.
First we have to be attractive to a player, which we can be. Then we have to offer the right money, which we don't always do, then we have to offer the right personal terms, which we are capable of , and then we have to fight off the aforementioned, which we can't do on several levels.
We have to take our chances, take some gambles and hope that the odd gem like Suarez comes our way.

regards
