Did he leave Ajax for this?

He may do well with the core they have now. I bet Danny Murphy is the assistant manager in a few years time.

bet villa fans are gutted.

To be fair to fayed he has run fulham very well and they are a decent club in this league

I want to know why Hughes left with no other club to go to?

Hughes didn't leave without another club to go to.

Until he left Fulham.

Maybe he slagged off the jackson statue?

Hee Hee

I reckon Hughes must have had some sort of understanding with Villa which they then pulled out of when the press started carrying the story.

I dont understand why Villa pulled out when the press started carrying the story.

DHSC - that's what I first thought, but the article in which I saw this mentioned went on to say that Villa felt they were being railroaded by whoever had leaked the news, and didn't like that. It's similar to what happened when West Ham let O'Neill slip through their fingers, except in that case it was the club who got ahead of themselves with their press leaks and the prospective manager who pulled out.

Thanks Jules. Lerner's doing good things there by showing he's not going to get fucked around. Hope this doesn't come back to bite Villa on the ass though as they still have to appoint a manager. Hughes could have been a good appointment.

Apparently this morning the bookies make McClaren the new favourite for the job. Villa fans are up in arms about that, as you can imagine. ;D

He isnt that bad a manager to be honest.

He isn't that good either, mate. I know he's done well in Holland, but (a) he then flopped in Germany and (b) in any case the job in Europe is far more akin to that of a first team coach in this country, and coaching is how McClaren originally made his name. I wouldn't want him anywhere near the manager's job at any Prem club I supported.

There's a report somewhere this morning that Fulham want Chris Hughton to be assistant. They were previously a team at Spurs

You do wonder how these so called "football experts" get a job. Tony Gale on Sky Sports claiming Jol can lead Fulham to a top six finish next season. Erm.... what now..

Jol is a decent manager and a likeable guy. They wanted him last season and have now finally gotten their man. Good luck to him.

To be honest I think Jol sees Fulham as a stepping stone. Who can blame him though? I think they are pretty clear about this too, given their squad strength and stadium capacity, thus the offer of a 2 yr deal. Curious what their long term plan is though. Another managerial change after a season or 2, and the Hodgson/Hughes(/Jol) cycle repeating again?

The coming season should be a challenge to Jol, unless of course, he decides to give up on the Europa League. Given how early its starting and the squad strength and depth, its pretty much of an ask.

@KellyCates: Nice RT @Chris_Cohen Wasn't sure if it'd be O'Neill or Jol taking over at Fulham but with the MJ statue, it was 'Gonna be Martin something'.
