Gerrard has shown that he has a great passing range. He hasn't shown that it's pivotal to the role. We have plenty of players who drop deep to collect the ball, and our patient build-up play means that long raking balls are a luxury rather than a necessity. As a general rule, defensive midfielders do not have a great passing range. If they did then they wouldn't be asked to do the dirty work.
