Fucking hell Andy, between you & Molbystwin you'd think we'd just sold our bet player.

He was a mardy wantaway cunt who had only one effective position which he was third choice in, & he shit out of any tackle with any venom in whatsoever.

Yes, he did offer a spark of creativity, but he wasn't consistent enough, nor strong enough in his all round game to warrant all this wailing & gnashing of teeth, that's for sure.

The fact Kenny didn't fancy him isn't the point. By all means bomb him off but have a replacement lined up. People are being accused of bigging up Meireles. Well the same is true of Shelvey and Henderson. Shelvey isn't good enough/ready and Henderson hasn't played enough to demonstrate he can be the lynchpin in central midfield. If Gerrard was back playing I wouldn't have a problem with Raul going but he's not and I think we're taking too much of a gamble.

That's not the whole story though mate, if he's sulking & being a cunt in the dressing room it effects team spirit too.

In which case you either leave him in the reserves, or get your money back.
I think thats because me and Molby think he was one of our best players mate.
When Kenny came in and we started playing attacking football Raul (along with Kuyt, Maxi and Suarez) was at the heart of much of it.
In our last 15 games (when we outplayed EVERYONE including United and Citeh) Raul played 13 of them we won 9 and drew 4. He didnt play in 2 of them. We lost them both.
I cant see why anyone would be anything but gutted.
His first season in English football and he was the Fans player of the year, and scored important goals and hes gone to Chelsea....not Lyon or Porto or Roma....CHELSEA.
Its shit.

We have to move on of course and i wish we were playing this weekend to get over this hump, but genuinely i feel deflated. He filled the Gerrard void really well last year and that void is still there.
🙁

I think we knew he was going, when we dropped him for the last two games of last season. As some were making the point in the summer, we over bought in centre midfield, so I think we had this all sorted before. I don't believe it was a case that he landed us with a transfer request and we had no time to replace him.
It didnt look like the team had a problem with him when he set up our goal vs Arsenal mate.
Im not buying it. He was promised higher wages by the old regime and DESERVED them and it wasnt honoured so hes asked to leave and we have let him. Its a moneyball decision not a football one and its wank.
Having a Raul Meireles is better than NOT having one.

I think that was a presumption based on the fact he had handed in a written transfer request and that being the case he didn't want to be here

Didn't know he'd put a written request in. I had really wanted him to stay but I've got to say that changes my view.

I think he'll do well for the Chavs though. >🙁

He didn't play 6 times last season, and in those 6 games we got 5 points.

It's fucking bizarre business.

Too soft to play at central midfield and too ineffective to play as a attacking role. His small purple batch in January made people think he's better than he actually is. He's just an another south european soft-ass who can't make it in England. Chelsea has put their hand in deep shit. Good work Comolli.

Just the opposite I'd say as Sven = the site's #1 WUM ...

As for stats last year (Krump & Oncey) -> we weren't a very deep team last year ... we relied on Jay Spearing! Now we have Adam and Henderson, who can do a good enough job in the middle.

Would I have rather kept Ming? Yes
Woudl I have rather we sold him abroad? Yes
Will the team be able to compete and win without Ming? Definitely

Agreed.
Also few things that annoys me about this:
-Merieles is not old, he's 28
-Selling to Chavs, they would never sell to rival yet we seemed to be happy to sell to them which is fine if it's 50 million but for a 12 million?
-Seems like every season a player seems to be unhappy for whatever reason, why is this?
Sure we can be good old british lad who will be loyal forever more but we can't build a good team around all brits.
Are we doing enough off the field to help these players? Pandering to their needs ?
UTD, City and Chelsea all seem to have players who want to stick around, so what about us?

Champs League?

Are people forgetting we dont have as many games to offer this year? We dont really need him and he will only take valuable game time away from young prospects who need it.

And maybe we wouldnt have had to sell him if we hadnt overpaid for people earlier in the window.
You havnt read Svens post properly.

I think people may be missing the point that it seems obvious he had his head turned by another Portugese offering more money and CL football which prompted his transfer request.

I don't think either Kenny or Damien would have left it so late to do this business given the evidence during the rest of the transfer window.

Taking the long view, he's an older player, and a depreciating asset. He was on a low contract, and if we are to keep him, we have to think is he critical to our plans long term, because we'd have to pay him more and by the end of his contract we'd get little for him, having spent a lot.

Taking the short view, our team will be worse this year for selling him. He wasn't first choice right now, but I'm not so sure by the end of the season that would be the case on merit. It's not that I think he's some tremendous player, it's not that I think Charlie Adam et al are shit.

I just don't buy that they are some comfortable order of magnitude better than Meireles.

By selling him the assumption must be that Adam and Henderson are better players. I sometimes wonder if I'm watching a different sport.

Could it not be that the player was offered better wages by a club offering CL football as well?

Exactly.

Look, I'm not denying he's a good player, he is. However, once a player tells us he wants to leave & is prepared to hand in a transfer request, fuck him.

Yes, we may miss his creativity, but Henderson is getting better & better in that position, so I've no doubt he can do as much of a job, if not more.
