Lionel Messi will be allowed to leave Barcelona on a free transfer next summer, should the 32-year-old Argentina forward desire, owing to a clause in his contract. (El Pais, via L'Equipe)
With the Nike deal on the horizon, could we afford him?
Fully aware clubs like City, Chelsea in particular PSG could offer him mega payday. The Chinese clubs will probably could blow everyone else out of the water with huge financial package.

I thought I read that the clause only allowed him to leave to non European clubs after he hits a certain age. Basically to allow him to return to Argentina whenever he wants.

It always makes me a bit sad when properly great players never make it to the premier League. Although probably for the best we didn't see him destroying defences for city.

In Europe, it could only be Utd or Juve, so it is best he joins the Old Boys like he promised

What's the name of that Aerosmith song again? "Dream something..."?

He'll stay there until he returns to Argentina. No point tarnishing his reputation at this stage of his career in anyway by leaving.

Either way, Liverpool won't be signing Messi, and the importance of this Nike deal is getting completely exaggerated.

Of course we could afford him, they'd be no transfer fee.

Maybe 500k a week on wages for 2 years, I think we could manage

I don't see Messi playing for another team in Europe. It's Barca until he wants to ride off into the sunset back home. He has nothing else to prove at this point.

Bale was offered €1m/w to play in China, imagine what they're going to offer (arguably) the greatest player in world football?
