I think if we made a list of players who aren't going to be in the CL next year and who havent become subject of transfers, or who have fallen down the pecking order at their respective clubs,we'd probably see that the pool of potential transfers to Liverpool is much wider than we think it is.

Mata - "you can wait until the end of the transfer window to start jumping to conclusions"
I'm not jumping to any conclusions. I'm responding to people suggesting that a collection of Downings is good enough.
I think most people are expecting us to make at least one signing like Mata as well.

Modric to Spurs for 17M
Aguero to A.Madrid for 15M
Suarez to Liverpool for 22.5M

What do those three transfers have in common?
None of those teams were in CL at the time? You can attract top quality regardless of CL status if you have the money plus Liverpool's reputation as a big club is a factor too as players know we'll be back in it sooner or later.

I thought the Downing lovers were saying that we cant sign the good players because we are shite and small fry?? So we are going to sign a marquee player and Downing as a safety net then??

OHHH....

thats OK then. As long as we are not really wasting money on a heap of shite player, after all he's for the bench really. Fuck a duck.

Fuck two ducks in fact.

And no none of them were in the champs league neither when they signed those...

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGH

Calm down. I can't speak for others but I've never stated we can't sign good players.

We need two new wingers and I have for some time felt we'll sign one British and one quality continental one. If those two are for example Mata and Downing I'm very happy. If we only signed Downing then I too would be disappointed but I'm confident that wont be the case.

Ducks? No thanks. Make it a dog and I'll seriously consider it if we pull off Mata. 🙂

No one said it's good enough, or certainly I don't see many people suggesting that it's 'all we need' which is what you and Molby seem to be suggesting (and what Molby seems to be stuck on repeat with in every thread *yawn*), most people have said they are good additions IF we also add a top drawer attacker.

And it was a fair point anyway about Mata...

IT'S FUCKING JUNE.

The fact that it's June has got nothing to do with it. I'm not suggesting we won't be linked to anyone good or go onto sign nothing but mediocre rubbish.

I was simply making the point that if you argue the case for about four or five players based around needing steady eddies, you're more than likely going to end up with a team full of them. That's a debate - which the forum has been having for the last couple weeks - that can be held separately from what will *actually* happen.

Once again - and I feel like I have to say this daily - there is no need for education here. Some hysterics from one or two guys aside (some of which has been humourous anyways), everyone knows it's June, everyone knows what the constraints are and everyone knows, understands and agrees with patience.

Shall we just have a succession of topics and posts that all say "let's just wait and see"?

You debate the state of play "as is" acknowledging the fact that it may change. That's the way the forum works.

*BASTARD knowing nod*

I've gone with the 'Yes' camp on the basis that if he's good enough for Kenny he's good enough for me. I remember people saying Barnes was a gamble when Kenny bought him from Watford and Ripley & Wilcox were hardly marquee names in his Championship winning Blackburn team. Downing, despite the hysterics in this thread, was voted Aston Villa's player of the season not Ashley Young. Kenny knows what he's doing, trust him.

Post of the day.

For stating the obvious? Whatever the 'as is' and whatever the 'what if', the fact is some posters are going over the top and posting the same hysterics because we're not being linked with whichever superstar they fancy. S'all I was saying.

Downing is a good player and hopefully we'll sign someone like Mata too, it's not a sign of anything and it's not repetition of Pennant-like signings because he's a much better player with alot more end product.

The fact he's not the rampaging Ronaldo type is neither here nor there if we go in for another attacker aswell who offers something along those lines. We still lack width and quality delivery from the wide positions.

Ha, but I think you are a little guilty also of reacting hysterically to.. erm.. others reacting hysterically.

The problem isn't Downing, the player, in isolation, but Downing syndrome - Carroll for 35M, Jordan for 10-20M, being linked quite heavily with Dann, Adam and one or two others whose quality is up for debate. They may all well turn out to be fantastic players and / or combine to produce a fantastic team, but I think the concerns being voiced are not unreasonable.

It's early days, but the 'as is' picture of our transfer strategy (which has been backed up by the likes of mark mc) can still be discussed and it is underwhelming particularly given the sums of money being talked about.

Although I agree with you, it is a bit unfair to skew your argument by leaving Suarez out of your list.

I'm sick of reading a thread, developing my opinions, getting ready to post them, and then Keniget swoops in and says exactly what I was thinking.

Every. Fucking. Thread.

Fuck you, Keni. You've rendered me posting on this site obsolete.

I'm a 'Yes'.

It appears that Kenny wants to return to a UK-centric team with only super-quality additions from abroad (Suarez, Pepe). I'm cool with that.

my opinion in a nutshell is;
I'm not over the moon by the players we are linked with but I can see why those would be signed. 'IF' they are signed and if the transfer window closes and they are the only players purchased I wont want kenny's/camolli's head on a plate although I would be a little disappointed that one marquee signing wasn't achieved.

okay, not exactly a nutshell.

the only time I get annoyed with management is when they make decisions that make NO SENSE.

passing on nico for diouf - made NO SENSE
passing on alves for pennent - made NO SENSE
buying keane when we needed with gerrard and torres were the most prolifc partnership in the country - made NO SENSE

but I can see the logic behind some of the players linked and I also acknowledge we're not in europe.

Neil, you've often in the past bleated on about how we never had the funds to buy competitively and how we were never backed properly and had to make do with average players.

Now you seem to think that even with better financial support we still need to buy average players because we're not in the CL.

There are lots of players who arent going to be in Europe next season either, and who would look at a transfer to a resurgent Liverpool as a massive step up in their career.

My own view is that our management are trying to balance playing it safe (Downing, Adam) with taking a few risks (Henderson, Carrol, Suarez). Unfortunately most of the time 'safe' just means..you guess it..'average'.

I probably voted yes if I voted, but I made my stance clear that we were overpaying for him
