[article=http://www.sport.co.uk/football/nemanja-matic-top-of-the-liverpool-targets-for-january/4441955/?] A Bola is stating that Benfica manager Luís Filipe Vieira, told Benfica TV the player has a 50m euro buy-out-clause in his contract which seems very high for a defensive midfielder, but ultimately means Benfica don’t want him to leave.

It’s widely known that Benfica are a club in debt, to the sum of 450m euros (380m) (BBC article) and the possibility of selling one of their high value stars may be necessary to balance the books.

In the same A Bola article it also states that scouts from the Anfield outfit have been seen at Benfica games on more than one occasion.[/article]

[article=https://twitter.com/OptaJose/status/352152414918422529]1431 - Nemanja Matic has attempted more passes than any other Benfica player in the Primeira Liga 12/13 (55 per game).[/article]
[article=https://twitter.com/WhoScored/status/352335998270709760]Nemanja Matic: Only 2 players won possession more times in the midfield 3rd than the Benfica midfielder (47) in the Europa League last year[/article]
[article=http://www.givemesport.com/379832-matic-would-be-great-at-real-madrid-says-mijatovic]Ex-Real Madrid star Predrag Mijatovic would love to see Chelsea transfer target Nemanja Matic move to the Bernabeu, according to A Bola.

In an interview with the Portuguese newspaper, Mijatovic revealed he thinks Matic could become one of Europe's best players. The Serbian international joined Benfica as part of the deal that brought David Luiz to Chelsea in the 2011 January transfer window.

And Mijatovic, who played for Real Madrid for three seasons between 1996 and 199, believes Matic has the quality to play for the Spanish giants as well.

"He is an impressive player," Mijatovic told A Bola. "I watch the central midfielders in Europe and I see no one better than him.

"I have closely followed his progress and see that he's matured a lot. He has more experience and will become a real playmaker, one of the best players in European football.

"[And] I am sure that soon he will jump into a major club. Benfica is a good club to show [his ability] in Europe, but I would love watching him play in the jersey of Real Madrid.

"I am no longer at the club, but I sincerely believe it would be a great signing."

Mijatovic also spent three years at the Bernabeu as Real Madrid's director of football between 2006 and 2009.

A Bola asked Mijatovic to put a transfer valuation on the midfielder - suggesting a €100m starting point following Gareth Bale's summer move to the Bernabeu.

But the former-Madrid director resisted such a heady price tag, although he did concede that the Chelsea transfer target would not come cheap.

"It would be fantastic for Benfica to receive €100m for Matic. But I do not think it can happen.

"It is hard to talk about numbers, it depends on many circumstances, the moment when the possibility of a transfer arises and the degree of interest of the club who wants to buy.

"What I can say is that when the opportunity arises to change clubs, Matic for sure will not come cheap."

Over the summer Benfica boss Jorge Jesus admitted it would be "almost impossible" to hold on to Matic in the face of interest from Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho. Benfica reportedly slapped a £38m asking price on the midfielder in an effort to hold on to him.

And the transfer deadline came and went with the Serbian still at the club, although both Chelsea and Real Madrid could launch bids in the January window.[/article]
[article]The Serbia international might come with a prohibitive price. Benfica, aware of interest in their player, awarded him a new five-year contract in January, in part to strengthen their own position when it came to negotiating with potential buyers.[/article]
[article=http://www.theguardian.com/football/2013/apr/13/manchester-united-nemanja-matic-benfica]Matic's form since then has established him as one of Benfica's key players, identified for special acclaim by the Newcastle manager, Alan Pardew after Thursday's Europa League quarter-final at St James's Park.

"The way they kept the ball was fantastic, but Matic in particular," Pardew said. "The way he has grown since he has gone away from Chelsea … he's a terrific player for them."[/article]
[article=http://www.portugoal.net/index.php/more-benfica-news/40665-matic-benficas-new-golden-boy]Whilst Matic possesses the strengths of power and aerial ability (which might be expected of the player considering his size) he is also very talented with the ball at his feet, with an uncanny ability to turn defence into attack with a well-timed interception followed by a swift and incisive pass. This helps explain why has been able to fit in so well with Benfica’s fluid style.[/article]

Would be a fantastic signing, but I believe Chelsea would beat us to him every time. Seems like they're the ones constantly being linked with a move to bring him back.

How come Chelsea and Man U keep producing talents and we don't?

Well, Chelsea in the past few years seem to have hoovered up a lot of the tier one talent (I'm guessing spending a lot of money in the process). Then they're quite happy to loan them out and have good relationships with a bunch of clubs (feeder clubs) in different counties. How many other clubs for example could afford to have guys like Lukaku and Courtios on seemingly permanent loans?

We spend on youth but probably not anywhere near as much.

So the answer to your question is: money and lots of it.

Seems to pay off though doesn't it?

I thought this thread was going to be about 2 pictures of Vidic and Mata morphed into one another.

Chelsea must be one of the worst places to go as a talented youngster though.
Mourinho isnt known for giving youth a chance and if I remember correctly Ancelotti wasnt either.

Just look at how De Bruyne has been treated. Loaning out Lukaku again and bringing in an old Eto'o.
Van Ginkel is probably the only positive so far.

I've read some stories about some insane wages that some of the Chelsea youngsters are on.
Like this one:

Without even breaking into the first team, Loftus-Cheek (17) would bank more than £1.7m. His basic salary over the two-and-half years of his deal was worth £912,000. Chelsea also agreed to pay him a signing-on fee of £375,000, in three instalments, while three loyalty bonuses would have totalled a further £350,000.

Van Ginkel is out for the season thought isn't he? City is the other club young talent goes to die or endlessly go on loan.

Ehh, City doesn't really hoard young talent all that much. at least at the moment. There's only a couple players they have who can really be put in that bracket.

I'm talking about the likes of Sinclair, Rodwell, Weiss, even Sturridge who some say left because Hughes was too busy buying big names. Young lads don't get a chance they just buy and buy. I don't really follow city but I'm sure there's a load more.

Edit - I was mainly meaning the first two examples buying young guys for big money and theyre never gonna flourish. The second two were just examples that came into my head as I replied.

I get your point, but I don't think it's anywhere on the same scale. Clubs like Bayern and Barcelona have way more young talent that aren't getting adequate minutes.

Yea fair enough, I think I just like a good moan about city. They piss me off buying the likes of Roque Santa Cruz, Jo and others, more recently with Sinclair and Rodwell, they are paying massive money to stockpile decent or even average players and fill out their squad. It's madness, players that won't see the light of day are costing way over most clubs transfer record fees.

Difference being though those teams have young players in their B teams in lower leagues. Our country has the reserves.

At Bayern they all seem to get a little go. Only shaquiri seemed in the cold
