@BenSmithBBC: Premier League domestic TV rights sold for a, frankly astonishing, £5.136bn. Wow.

@JimBoardman: Sky Sports awarded 5 Premier League TV packages: Friday evenings, Monday evenings, Saturday 12:45s, Sunday afternoons and bank holidays

@JimBoardman: BT Sport awarded Saturday 5:30pm kick offs and midweek games in the latest Premier League TV deal

Insane amount of money.

This is when I would hope the league and FA would come in and tell the top clubs to subsidize the cost of regular tickets so that families/kids can easily go and watch a load of games.
Obviously won't happen, and prices will no doubt continue to increase.

Sad. The same people who'll moan about the licence fee, which is there to fight against cultural elites, will no doubt happily keep playing about £60+ every month to fund Murdoch's relentless drive to exploit the poorest and indulge the cultural elites. TH Green, come back to life so you can have a really good vomit.

I'm just so damn thankful to those great people out there streaming football games. Not grateful enough to click on ads, but damn, have they saved me money these few years.

Sorry but this is something I do know something about and is total bollocks.

Well I don't think it is given that every major sport is receiving massive Tv deals because they're one of the few things watched live by people (who are forced to watch the ads then)

Like this deal, the NFL, the Nba etc etc etc

As this article says:

And in the era of DVRs and illegal download sites, live sports make up some of the only TV programming viewers feel compelled to watch live. In fact, live NFL games accounted for nine of the 10 most-watched TV broadcasts of 2013.

As a result, advertisers in the market to reach a large group of people with the same message at the same time have been willing to pay more and more money for commercials during sporting events. While online channels like Facebook are starting to be able to offer marketers the same amount of reach as television, they can only do so by staggering a brand's message to users over a period of time.

Because of the NFL's unparalleled popularity and unique real-time marketing platform, the price of a 30-second Super Bowl ad has jumped from $3 million to $4 million since 2011, even though the audience for the game has remained steady around the 110 million mark.

But because of those high prices, more and more networks have been trying to get a piece of the pie. In recent years, live sports titan ESPN has faced intense competition from upstarts like NBC Sports, CBS Sports, and Fox Sports 1 for the rights to air broadcasts from the English Premier League, the World Cup, and Major League Baseball. Most recently, ESPN paid $15.2 billion over 10 years for Monday Night football, 73% higher annually than the previous deal.

No one seems to mention the money they get from foreign broadcasters. How much does that total?

The ads don't really apply so much to footy as you can just turn them off and only watch the match. US sports would be unwatchable for me with the amount of ads.

As this article says:

?
Wrong - average audience for a sky premier league game 1.2mil Dowton Abbey ( yuk ) 12.5 mil

And why are quoting facts for a completely different sport in a different country

Yet the money is increasing, why?

Because everyone DVR's programmes and skips the ads, with sport being the massive exception.

Its a rigged game though, Sky up the ante with money that isnt earned from Sports to cut the free to air broadcasters out of game.

The problem with TV figures for non-live shows is that they wait a few days and add on online viewing figures too right? I know that for The Apprentice they mentioned they wait to incorporate iPlayer views..

Insane money.

I don't mind paying my $72 a month as I get to watch every league game live and record all of them if I wish.

I wish we could do something like that here in the UK, I could pay the best part of £50 for Sky, then > £20 for BT broadband and yet still see maybe half the Liverpool games live, leaving no option but to find streams.

Another heads up but if anyone does want Sky half price for a year on all their packages please drop me a PM with your email address and I can get my bother to send you a link with the details. Think the basic broadband is also free if you pay the line rental.

This is how TV rights money was distributed in the five big European leagues in the 2013-14 season.

Spanish league is somewhat disgraceful..

Though you would imagine if we could sell our own TV rights we would get silly amounts..

There is a valid argument.. the smaller clubs do live of the success of the Bigger clubs in this league.. and that is deemed by some, somewhat unfair..

Why should a club like Burnley for arguments sake, get such a huge payout with very little global following ?

Though the flipside, with the PL model... it does make our league more competative.. I do prefer that argument

I do hope though people start cancelling their Sky subscriptions tenfold after Sky start to look to increase their subscription packages and look for cheaper means on the internet, as they have well overpaid for their package.. 80% more increase.. that will be passed onto consumers..

The bubble will eventually burst.. the better technolgy becomes the worse it will become for Sky and the PL...

It happend to the Music Industry, It is happening to the Film Industry.. it will happen to the Premier League

It is sad the Football is moving further away from the Working Class and becoming an Elitest Sport thanks to the Greedy bastereds that are the Premier League...

Players Wages will increase, Agent fees will Increase, and nothing will change with Ticket Prices

Quite surprised at him. I know he's football mad, but I would have thought he'd have longed to get back in the game after a brief bit of exposure to Sky's smug coverage.

Kids' footy pitches will still be shite.

Sadly that will still be the case..

Why would the Premier League want to invest in grass roots football when the good majority of players are from overseas..

Buy players from overseas to increase the PL brandname to bring more revenue to bring more elite players in from overseas to increase revenue..

Fucks me right off everything about modern football..

The difference, and edge, they have over the music and film industry is that they can broadcast new content, live, every week.
As pirating technology increases, so will that to combat it, and together with whatever reforms they come up with through the law, including serious restrictions through all ISP's, they'll probably be okay.
