Think it's more a case of Liverpool being respectful and not taking any numbers away from existing players. E.g. Darwin will still be the 9 as long as he's here.

Rio is not listed on the squad page (https://www.liverpoolfc.com/team/mens); it has been updated with the new numbers and Trey has been added (he wasn't on it last week).
Maybe they don't list players until they have full professional contract, which I think Rio can't have until he is 17.

Sounds like it might just be on the shirts the players wear, not on anything that's for sale. Which is what I hope happens as well.

That comes out after everyone’s bought the normal shirt as a limited edition… so everyone has to buy a second shirt.
