Who will it be? I really think we will try to go all out for Mbappe (either this summer or next). LeBron James recently becoming a full-fledged partner with FSG might help - this is the kind of “statement signing” he would love to make and he does have pulling power because of his brand and relationship with Nike.

But needless to say, we’ll have competition - pretty much every other club on the planet. So if we cannot make this happen (and I think we don’t have much of a chance for Haaland regardless), what are some of the alternatives we should be considering?

Obviously, Patson Daka will be a name on everyone’s lips and the competition for him will be almost as fierce. Can RB Salzburg really produce 2 superstars strikers back-to-back? His numbers are great, but I’m not yet completely sold on other aspects from the limited times I’ve seen him play - but if we can’t get Mbappe he may well be the best available option. At least we’ll definitely win the AFCON this time.

Personally I’m a big fan of a Miroslav Klose/Lewandowski/Klinsmann type of striker. Those are often underappreciated because fans don’t get excited as much about a slower player - but the right kind of “big man” can be extremely valuable in the long run and often more durable than the speedsters. The young Adam Hlozek that @Pesam mentioned looks like he could be such a player - but is he too young to make an impact? The Suarez/Lautaro Martinez/Dybala type of a hard-working, creative striker without standout physical attributes can be interesting too - but it’s rare for an English club to get someone like that before the Spanish and Italian ones do.

Daka has been sending hints he wants to move to Liverpool. Have a look at Ivan Toney of Brentford, could be a very good squad player

Mbappe? In the words of Steven Tyler: "Dream on"

We're gonna make a Jota type signing, a "someone on the verge" type player.
Probably from a midlevel team.

@rurikbird . With respect to Patson Daka, do you think the jump from Austrian League to our squad will be one transition too many. There is a danger he might end up like Minamino. Might be better for players to go from Austrian league to maybe Bundesliga or a team in the premier league where he will be given the time to settle and get used to the pace without pressure. I guess the alternative example is Mane but I don't have any idea on how Mane did for Southampton in his first season.

I'd love to sign Mbappe, and we'll probably give it a try. But the financial part of any type of deal will be to much for us.

The fight for Haaland will be on this summer, and its between Real Madrid, Utd and City. I have a feeling he'll end up at Real Madrid.
Maybe staying for one more year, and then moving for 66 mill £ to Real Madrid.

I'd be very interested in signing Patson Daka. He makes so much sense for us. Lightning pace, great finisher and integrated in that Red Bull way of playing.

FWIW, Dortmund have been linked to Origi today.

Patson Daka is a very different player from Minamino in terms of physical attributes (6'1) and lightning pace. His adaption to the league would be similar to Mane I'd reckon.

Mane scored 10 goals in 30 games for Soton in his first season.

Mbappe, Haaland, Lautaro Martinez would all cost absurd amounts of money, and I just can't see us getting any of them, Lebron and RedBird notwithstanding.

We'll probably get one of the likes of Patson Daka, Alexander Isak, Donyell Malen, Jonathan David, Pedro Neto, Raphinha.

I really do hope we get a striker that is good in the air. With the amount of crossing we do it would be stupid if we didn't. Imagine if we had Harry Kane.
Seriously, I wouldn't mind if we signed him. Hate on me all you want. He'd be perfect.

Gone quiet on Jadon Sancho - he not doing well? - he’s probably worth adding to the ridiculously priced that we’d never sign list.

Price will definitely come into it as I don't believe all the press murmurings about us spending big this summer (unless we sell someone for big money) so Mbabbe and Haaland can probably be ruled out especially if we don't get champions league. Patson Daka would be much more affordable and he's much more of a penalty box striker than Bobby is so we would need to change our style a bit to accommodate him but then again him being in the box more often than Bobby would be a big help to the full backs as too often there's no one to cross to when we attack. Him coming straight from the Austrian league is a concern though as the standard of defending isn't great.

I wouldn't mind signing the kid, he's obviously talented, but we could find a better more efficient striker imo.

From the people following the club closely, it seems only Daka is a potential target from the alternatives you listed.

Seems we’ll be going for some quality.

Raphinha too, no?

The good thing about Patson Daka is that his pace will allow us to stretch defenses, even if he doesn't score all that much at first. But then we would need proper goal-scoring options in other positions to compensate and this season that's been a problem.

Apparently these are the info. from the article:

I think this summer there will be intense competition for a forward. I see there might be a huge reshuffle going on. Top teams in EPL, Spanish league, Juve, Bayern, PSG (depending upon if one of Mbappe/Neymar leaves) ... all of them will try to sign a forward for various reasons. So not sure if might just opt out of the race purposefully because of inflated prices.

Yes, I think we are interested in him aswell. I didnt classify him as a striker in all honesty. I think any interest there will be dependent on fee.
Leeds would demand a premium.

Agreed, and a full season (fingers crossed) from Jota will add to that. You'd also think Mane will contribute more next season. 7 goals in 25 games isnt his usual standard.

Bit of a "coincidence" that Manes goal drought came after Virgil got injured. 4 goals prior to the Everton game, and even a winner that should have been good in that game.
But then only 3 league goals after that.

I would sign him.

Last chance to win a trophy too.
