Latest official survival rates, per the CDC.

0 to 19 - 99.997%
20 to 49 - 99.98%
50 t0 69 - 99.5%
70+ - 94.6% chance.

36x more likely to die by choking on food. Which, given the average sports fan, is probably low.

Lock it all down!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh, and just because I was curious, I googled how many Americans die from choking on food each year.

It seems to average at about 5,000 a year.

Over 200,000 have died already from Covid in what, 8 months?

You utter, utter bellend.

Would expect nothing less in fairness

Surely the point about crowds in stadiums is not the physical distancing once they get in - it’s how they get to the stadium, how they get in and how they move about it.

It’s all manageable - but it’s logistically a lot harder and would probably cost clubs more to open up for a few than to stay closed.

Besides - the problem the UK faces is community transmission - the Melbourne lockdown has been about limiting movement to stop community transmission - once you have that under control you can start to have more things open.

And yes, even then, a high proportion of clusters that pop up come via hospitality outlets.

Ha, that is the number that you latched onto? Well ignoring the ones that really mattered right above it? I expected nothing less really

Never really understood what people like you get out of being so afraid and making the world burn. Those aren't my numbers, those are from the CDC. I suppose you would prefer that they were worse so that you would feel better about making everyone's lives miserable?

No but by all means let's keep locking everything down and eliminating jobs and businesses and spiking mental health and suicide rates and abuse.

What’s the alternative?

Increase the likelihood of people getting it, which will increase deaths and increases pressure on healthcare.

There are other ways to address economics, mental health, suicide and abuse other than a mad rush back to a way of life that’s arguably to blame for much of the mess we find ourselves in.

What do you reckon the impact of opening things up while the virus is still freely circulating does to the mental health of someone in a higher risk category?

And I see how you completely ignored his coment about 9/11 ... c'mon the numbers are in the public domain

Because obviously the numbers that 'really matter' are the percentages cherry picked to make a totally asinine point, and not the number of dead people, right?

You utter, utter bellend.

Just to put this into context, here are the number of casualties from America's major wars:

Rank War Deaths
1 World War II 291,557
2 American Civil War 214,938
3 World War I 53,402
4 Vietnam War 47,424
5 Korean War 33,686
6 American Revolutionary War 8,000
7 Iraq War 3,836
8 War of 1812 2,260
9 War in Afghanistan 1,833
10 Mexican–American War 1,733

So more have died from Covid than every war besides WW2 and the Civil War combined.

But hey, no biggie, eh?

I don't see those numbers matching here: https://covid.cdc.gov/covid-data-tracker/#demographics

For example 50-64 death rates are 22,628/1,028,933= 2.2%, so survival is 97.8%

This attitude confuses me.

If this isn't necessary, & it's all a huge overreaction, or some kind of scam, then who exactly benefits from all the restrictions, massive economic downturn, business closures & job losses?

It's a conspiracy theory with no real motive behind it. Even the wildest of conspiracy theories usually have some kind of reasoning behind it.

In this case you'd need EVERY world leader to be in on it. They're not, just see Brazil, & your illustrious leader for the first couple of months of the pandemic in denial about it, & they ones that aren't, have seen HUGE issues by acting so late & half heartedly after they were forced into it when they too realised their hospitals couldn't cope with the numbers of cases.

So there's literal evidence of people in power trying to deny it, failing, & the repercussions of that are still being felt there, which blows this shit out of the water.

Well, he's clearly not in on it because he's busy fighting the deep state apparatus that want to take away our rights / freedom and implant chips in us all..

In fairness to ct - and I don't like his posts quite a lot of the time - he's not denying it's real, is he? If he is, that's retarded like.

The virus is going to be "freely circulating" until herd immunity or mutates into oblivion. The impact of not opening for what could be a long long time is obvious to any rational person.

I'd love to hear any real genuine ideas how to address the economic, mental health, suicide, and abuse issues that have risen like a volcano while we Chicken Little about a virus that you has a 99.99x survival rate for the vast majority of the population.

I don't think so...

But who wants to give me odds he's self-described as 'pro-life'?

It's real enough. The irrational fear about it is even more real, and infinitely more damaging. Do you remember forcing everyone to wear masks for H1N1? Shut down businesses and schools and bars? Crater the economy? No?

The CDC numbers tell the whole story. It's a real virus that kills .0x of people under 70, the vast majority of whom have multiple comorbidities and would have been susceptible to any virus or other catalyst for their demise. And look at what our governments have done.

Sweden has shown the way and has lost its status as America's favorite socialist nation (even though it's not a socialist economy, and American leftists don't get that).

The problem is that this virus is airborne and it is highly infectious, so it can infect every single member of the population at which point the survival rate isn't going to be of any consolation. Also many of us on this site are edging into the age group where survival is not a foregone conclusion. If it comes down to me dying of respiratory failure and some woke millennial committing suicide or losing their useless fake job, then brother, they are going down.

Not only death, which I hear is pretty long term, there seems to be other rather worrying long term conditions that people are suffering with too after coming down with it.

Incidentally, Sweden has approx the same population as Greece and has had 20x the number of deaths. The population density in Greece is a lot higher than Sweden's too.

The US budget for military spending in 2020 is just shy of $700 Billion - roughly 1/3 of the global spend on defence and 1/2 of the total US Government spend - how about taking some of that and reinvesting it in more direct support for people in economic hardship or in programs to help alleviate the things that cause Mental Health issues.

Mental Health, abuse, suicide - are things that existed before COVID and will exist after it.

COVID may have amplified the issues - but it hasn’t created them out of thin air.

The people that tend to bang on about these issues now - tend to be the ones that were demanding that those areas had their funding cut a year ago - strangely enough.

Over 200,000 people have died in your country.

More people than in every war it has fought *combined* with the exception of the Civil War and WW2.

*That* is the fucking story, not some bullshit semantics about percentages.

I'd love for you to try and address that, but you won't because you can't, because all you've got are these frankly insanely tortured mental gymnastics.

Ironic that you describe Sweden as "showing the way" given that its economy has contracted more in Q2 than its neighbours Denmark, Finland and Norway, whilst having a death rate (per million population) that is 5x, 9x and 11x higher respectively.

In reality, the solution was simple and achievable, as proven by the likes of Taiwan and South Korea - listen to scientists, take adequate precautions, wear a fucking mask and don't be a dick.

Unfortunately for 200,000 dead Americans, the Dick-in-Chief decided to politicise the situation and prefers to worry about numbers like how the stock market, or his popularity in the polls are doing, rather than how many corpses there are.

It's fucking ridiculous, and so are you.

'Irrational fear'...how many people have to die until it's rational, in your mind?

You're a fucking joke. A walking pastiche of every cliché about dumbfuck Americans there is going.

I hope for your sake it doesn't require someone close to you dying for you to see how fucking wrong you are

Oh, and this?

Universal Basic Income, proper investment in mental health services, universal healthcare, a justice system that is truly blind and equitable as it's supposed to be (oh, and actually holds police officers to the same laws as other people, given that 40% of them are domestic abusers) would probably all be a start...

But less me guess..."Waaaaaa, that's socialism" or "No way can we afford that! There isn't a magic money tree!" or some other bullshit, right?

The problem isn't only that it's 200k deaths. It's that it's not slowing down.
In Sweden, despite our high death rates, infection rates has slowed down significantly.
The mistake we made was that we weren't able to protect our elderly in care homes etc. That's basically it. Our economy has taken a hit but nowhere near as hard as other European countries. Was it worth it considering the amount of deaths? It's debatable.
We don't fear a 2nd wave as much as other countries who did a complete lock down.
Maybe we haven't said it officially but we're obviously going for herd immunity.

The only scientists worth listening to all died over fifty years ago or else are preoccupied with ensuring the remaining ones die too.
