... that can be the only conclusion after Hodgson's comments about N'Gog after the EL match and this news :

Spanish legend Raul’s agent has claimed Liverpool wanted to sign him following his decision to quit Real Madrid, but the offer came too late to dissuade him from joining Schalke 04. “Three days ago we had an offer from Liverpool,†said Gines Caravajal.

Yes of course Raul is a star, but yesterday's star, and if that is what Hodgson is looking at (cheap back-up options) then Remy and any of his ilk are just pipe-dreams. More than likely we will end up with an over 30 has-been on the down. Start trawling. Hope & pray I'm wrong.

Think you're reading too much into press reports, old lad. Suggest trying not to dwell on shit like this.

Well there is an actual quote from Raul's agent (maybe he's lying, though agents wouldn't do that would they). Hopefully I have read too much into it but it sounds ominous.

I don't think the reading too much into it bit was that we might have been after Raul.

It was the total utter doom and gloom that followed.

Agents lie all the time. Whatever happened to the Huntelaar loan bid.

All is very quiet on that front.

I just got a text that we are in for a lad from Liege. Mbonkai or something. It's almost done apparantly.

Monaco are closing in on the capture of highly-rated centre-forward Dieumerci Mbokani.

The 24-year-old is currently on the books of Standard Liege, but has been attracting interest for some time.

Monaco are wary of releasing too much information at present regarding the deal they have put in place, as they fear a late move from another of Europe's top clubs could leave them empty-handed.

It has been reported that the likes of Hamburg and Liverpool have also shown an interest in Mbokani this summer.

It is, however, Monaco who are in pole position to sign the Congo international and they are confident they will get their man.

Springboard
Mbokani was at Stade Louis II for medical tests on Friday and coach Guy Lacombe is hoping his pursuit of the African ace will now be pushed through without a hitch.

"I told him what I expected from him," Lacombe told L'Equipe.

"I explained that Monaco could be a great springboard for him.

"If he can be a success here, he can be a success anywhere."

From the SA site.

Although Sky Sports insist that Congo International Dieumerci Mbokani is having a Medical at Monaco, Standard Liege have reported that Liverpool have bid 12 million Euros for the rated Congo International Striker.

The link to the story from Standard Liege's website:

And it also appears Hodgson was after the same player when still a Fulham manager

So does this mean reports of our interest in Defour have been wide of the mark and in actual fact, it's this guy we want?

Is he any good? Doesn't seem too inspiring on the face of things.

Hmm 12mil for a player ive never heard of, playing in the belgium league. All that video shoes is he can score headed goals and not really much else. Not conviced

Funnily enough, when the Hodgson heading to Liege game came up last week I thought of this player as a possible target for him.

I thought he played very well against us a couple of years back. He led the line with strength, a nice touch and unselfishly. He also had a fierce shot on him but looked a bit raw all told.

Anyone know how he's been doing since.

On what I saw of him I'd say 8-12m would be about right. He'd be excellent back-up for Torres.

Let's just hope that we're in for a double deal; Defour + Mbokani for 20m.

How have Standard Leige built up such a strong team? I hadn't heard of them until 3 years ago.
