On Nov 9th 2004 one of the clubs most successful captains ever passed away prematurely.

As a few on here already know I have written to the club asking them for their support in attempting to combat the awful disease which took his life.

Lefty said more about him than I can so click the link for a cracking read.

YNWA Emlyn.

Obviously I didn’t see him play but from what videos, interviews and images I have been lucky enough to see and read I can tell he was a great player and man.

Everytime I see a picture or video of him lifting the FA Cup I can't help but smile.

Can't believe it's 3 years Vantage, I remember not long before, being told about someone a friend knows being away on their hols, and staying in the next apartment to Emlyn and his wife, and Emlyn had been complaining of really violent headaches, this was just before he found out about his illness.

I've always had a soft spot for the big guy, I know he was pretty much a liked or loathed kind of bloke, even with our own players, but I always thought he seemed a charming, funny character.

YNWA Crazy Horse.

Would have loved to have been around to see him play.

All hail A Man Called Horse...

God,I'd have loved to have seen him,Souey or Smith break Gayface or Dogbreath into 4.9 pieces.

Hahaha. what a thought! The Gay Portuguese Waiter mincing around with Souey or Hughes on the park.

Once, just once it would happen.

"Ambulance for the Gay Portuguese Waiter!"

Seemed a wonderful man. Genuinely loved to win ANYTHING for Liverpool. His joy at the League Cup wasn't far off the European Cup. The smile said it all.

There's a clip somewhere of him advocating Paisley to be manager of the year... his passion in what he was saying was immense.

We've had some wonderful captains... Souness, Liddell, Yeats, etc, but I'd put Hughes at the top of the pile.

Am I right in thiking that a Crazy Horse line has since been added to Fields Of Anfield Road?

Would be nice to hear it at the weekend!

A third post, but things just coming back to me and I feel the man is worth it.

One of my favourite Shankly lines... he goes to see Emlyn Hughes at Blackpool and first words were simply "Son, do you want to play for a football club?".

Fortuntely he did.

My first real memory of him was on Question of Sport as a team captain (opposite Bill Beamaunt as I recall) although I have really shadowy memories of him playing, I think. He was a really infectious character, always in fits of giggles and was always the person I supported, not least because I knew he was a great red. He's a legend for us, and I've no doubt is fondly remembered by many many non reds too.

Great tribute that Vantage, and fitting that the great man will be the first to have TWO threads in the vault dedicated to him.
YNWA

Those threads were ace, who's turn was it?

Peggy get your finger out.

A great player.

A great captain.

A shame he died not long before Number 5 was won. Winning it made me think of him and it brought tears to my eyes.

YNWA Emlyn.

RIP.

Emlyn's favorite Shanks story is about Bill driving him in an old Morris Minor just after he'd signed, and they got pulled up by the Police, and Shanks said

"Son! Don't you know who's in this car?"

The Policeman looked at Bill then at Emlyn and said "No" (He'd played only a few times and never on TV)

and Shanks said

"Its the future captain of England!" prophetic or what?

Emlyn never won the League Cup with Liverpool although he was in the Final v Forest in 1978
( Fuck 'em all Fuck 'em all at Anfield the Forest will fall)

He did however win it with Wolves the club he signed for after we had to let him go...

Who will ever forget his Drunken ramblings after our European Cup win? The Bitters never will...

"Will you join me in a Song?" He said to the Sea of red supporters

"YES!!" They replied

"Liverpool are Magic Everton are Tragic Na Na Na Naaa Na Na Na Naaa" He had to write an apology to them in the next Seasons Programme ;D

Oncy, I think you moved this. Thanks mate. I shall be back in another year. I still haven't heard from our American friends. Maybe good news, I dunno. Last time I wrote 2 years go, His Royal Rickness had already replied with a 'promise to look into things'.

Well, I 've had my reply. But neither Tom or George took time out to write! I guess they have other things on their plates at the moment.

Any way,

Dear vantage,

Blah blah blah, lots of requests, blah blah, maybe, blah blah, passed it to blah blah,

Love,

LFC

Two years ago I wrote to Rick Parry and his PA sent a similar letter, promising that that someone would into it and come back to me. I'm still waiting for them to do so, so I'll not hold my breath on this one.
