Obviously dependent on who we bring in, but who's going to take them next season? We have a fair few players like Lucas, who have shown that they can take them well when we've endured shoot outs, but who will be the ever present who will take them next season?

I don't know, but I don't like the thought of anyone else taking them.

I'm confident he'll score every single time Stevie steps up.

I know he misses very very occasionally, but it genuinely takes me by surprise.

Balotelli if he was to get a game.

I always think it's the players with the cleanest technique that make the most reliable penalty takers.

So Sterling would be ruled out. markovic could be the answer

I think Coutinho and Markovic are flair players and inconsistent as hell in all aspects of their game. Would never use them for this.

Rafa used to share the job around. Maybe we'll go back to that, at least until a clear no.1 candidate emerges.

Bizarrely I'm always convinced Gerrard will miss, because he looks so not arsed

Sturridge is the only one I'm confident in, if he's not fit, I'd go with someone new. Most of the rest of our squad have pretty poor technique. Lambert or Balotelli maybe, but I doubt they'll play much, if they're even here next season.

Exactly this, I always think of the like of Berger, someone who would just put their foot through it cleanly. Lucas takes a good pen, to be fair.

Lucas wont be here next season. Big question marks over the futures of Lambert and Balotelli.

I'd go with Sturridge. Maybe Hendo as back up or someone we sign this summer.

Nah, one of the few benefits on watching on telly is the close ups on their face before taking a pen.

He completely zones out, you can actually see it in his face, I guarantee you that he just hits it through muscle memory after picturing himself scoring it, that's why they're so clinical.

Which considering his personality, is some achievement, mostly thanks to that sports psychologist's techniques I'd imagine, but still incredible training & willpower on Steven's part.

Gerrard is one of the better penalty takers around imho.
Only one close to him in the squad is Balotelli. Who is also known to be one of the best.

I've always hated that.

Not quite sure why tbh, cos the logic is sound, it stops opposition keepers knowing exactly who they may be facing, it gets the rest of the side more comfortable taking them, it helps team spirit.

Nevertheless, I just hate it.

I don't hate it exactly, but I do prefer one player to take them regularly. It's a job which, I'd have thought, depended pretty heavily on regular practice and on being comfortable with the role.

That said, if there isn't a single outstanding post-Stevie candidate I'd want to see the choice made quite carefully, and a period of giving different players a try may be part of that.

It needs someone with the right temperament. Sturridge has the technique but I wouldn't trust him much. He's always likely to go for some stupid clever-clever shot than a clinical finish. Having seen most of the team look like nervous wrecks this season, frankly, I wouldn't trust any of them to be consistent enough under pressure. Hopefully one of our new signings will be up to the job.

Agree with all of that, but would add that it's possible for a player to grow into the role. Stevie did for one.

I prefer to have one person appointed to do it as well, uncertainty around roles is an easy way to make people nervous.

That said if we're well ahead and someone could step up and complete a hatttick by taking the penalty I'm all for then taking one over the appointed taker.

Stevie actually had several brief periods when his confidence went and he walked to the spot like a man on his way to the gallows. But mostly he's been excellent, and like Shearer he concentrates on the corners instead of that nonsense of going for a pointlessly risky shot down the middle.

Yes, Lallana could be the answer. Have no idea if he kicked for Southampton or what his track record is.

BUT I wouldn't be surprised at all if Hendo gets the job.
