The final table looks like this:

1. Alonso...............73 points
2. Gerrard................71 points
3. Kuyt....................39 points
4. Torres.................38 points
5. Reina...................37 points
6. Benayoun............34 points
7. Mascherano.........30 points
8. Carragher............27 points
9. Hyypia.................27 points
10.Riera..................17 points
11.Skrtel.................16 points
12.Keane................15 points
13.Aurelio...............15 points
14.Arbeloa..............14 points
15.Lucas.................12 points
16.Agger...................9 points
17.Insua....................8 points
18.El Zhar..................4 points
19.Dossena...............4 points
20.Ngog....................3 points
21.Babel................... 1 point
22.Pennant............... 1 point

Morse's points to note:

A big fightback from Stevie in the final 3 or 4 matches didn't quite win it this season. I know a lot of people reckon Stevie is our best player and indeed he should be treasured; but Xabi has shown that he is a crucial heartbeat for our side.

The 5 Sites to vote are YNWA, Scouser Tommy, Est1892, Six Crazy Minutes and The Liverpool Way. Each will have their victim players and some will have their favourites, some posters take the opportunity to make jokes (IE: voting for opposition players/referee or Manager)...but overall I believe this format gives a good indication of the way we feel players have performed over the whole season

Dirk Kuyt has seriously become indispensable and will be a valued player for years to come.

Mascherano and Benayoun have also become consistent. We are lucky to have a powerful core of good players now. With Riera, Insua and Lucas set to improve, we could find that 19 comes sooner rather than later.

With this season possibly his last, we should thank this year's winner of the Player of the Season Award...

Xabi Alonso!

Thanks for voting with me all season, see you next year!

The Previous Winners table:

2005..................JAMIE CARRAGHER
2006..................STEVEN GERRARD
2007..................DIRK KUYT
2008..................JAVIER MASCHERANO

2009..................XABI ALONSO!!!

2009..................XABI ALONSO!!!

Damn straight.

Good work Morse.

I wonder if, for a number of reasons, Alonso would have done quite so well if it had not been for last summer's saga

I think I gave it to Stevie in the other thread for his goals, but Xabi has been our most consistent player this year and performed to a very high level.

Richly deserved. 25 top 3 finishes suggests Alonso was consistently excellent this season.

definately player of the season. but not good enough to get into manu's midfield according to lee dixon. fucking knob.

The 5 Sites to vote are YNWA, Scouser Tommy, Est1892, Six Crazy Minutes and The Liverpool Way.

Is the table at the top of your post, an average of those 5 sites then Morse? Or did they have a different winner etc?

Back to the actual results, I think Xabi has been very good but has he been better than Gerrard? No. I'd question whether he's been better than Kuyt to be honest.

I'm quite surprised to see Reina do so well this year, as usually he doesn't get that many points as no one votes for keepers - but fair play to him. Only missed out on golden gloves again by 1 game.

I've loved watching Xabi this season but does this result highlight the flaws in proportional representation? Has Xabi won this because he has picked up so many 2nd and 3rd place votes this season (as well as the well deserved MoM's he's won)? Gerrard is indisputably our best player and for his goals, Torres is of more value to the team than Xabi. All of that said, Xabi has really made us tick this season. When he's in the team and playing well, he is so important to the side and to our tempo. I can't remember him having a bad game this season. He probably will have done, but I just can't remember it because so much of what he's done has been so good.

It's a very interesting debate.

Cheers Morse!

I think those results seem a fairly accurate reflection of our season. Stevie's been our most dynamic and eye-catching player, but Xabi's been the most consistent, and the two of them are way out in front of the pack.

Interesting to note that 'squad option' Yossi got more votes than 'crucial first-teamer' Mascherano, despite them both beginning the season poorly and picking up form towards the end. I guess this is because of all Yossi's goals and assists, which tend to get noticed more than endless tackling and running.

Also notable how many points Sami scored, despite playing far fewer games than Carra and Skrtel. We'll miss him, no matter what anyone says about his age and lack of pace.

Well done, Morse for putting this together and being so consistent through the season or rather through the last 5 seasons!

Xabi did have a great season, and was one of our top players, no doubt about it.

I'm pretty sure that Fernando's score would have been much higher had he plaed anywhere near the number of minutes Xabi did.

Other than this, nich to see the contribution of players like Kuyt, Banayoun and Mascherano being noticed.

A magnificent performance from Xabi this year after an up and down couple of seasons. I don't think it matters if he did win it on 2nd and 3rd placings, just as it doesn't matter if a team wins the league despite a worse record than others in certain respects. What matters is the sum total of all the relevant factors, and on that basis Xabi's a worthy holder of the title.

I add all the votes together.

Gerrard and Torres and our big summer signing will always have a better chance to pick up points since they are big personalities and people always focus on them. In the case of our new signing, people will instinctively WANT him to play well, it perhaps matters little whether the truth is different to the points tally. Sometimes a quietly effective Mascherano or Skrtel will be the difference between a win or draw, but if Torres gets on the end of an 89th minute cross, he is MOM.

Human nature I'm afraid.

Nice job!

Does Xabi get any kind of fan's trophy, or is this merely a paper cup?

If I were you, I would get together with the other site members, contact LFC and organize a 'fans POTY cup.'

At very least you're guaranteed a nice trip to Anfield to present Alonso his (plastic) cup!

On behalf of the site, I'd be willing to be the one to present Xabi with his trophy.

I bet that's not all you'd be willing to present to him, eh Anita.

😱

Some scumbag asked Alonso for his boots on Sunday and got them. I was a bit jealous.

Not that I'd know what to do with a pair of muddy footballers boots, should have asked for his shirt instead.

Neets- they're Alonso's boots. I'm sure you could convert them into a face-mask and breathe in that heady aroma of Catalan kebs.

Yeah, I'm not really half as psycho as most you of guys think Doc.

Dirt and mud are dirt and mud no matter whose shoes they are.

Not sure we should call it the 'poty' cup to be honest

It is just a paper cup I'm afraid.
I've no contacts to be able to organize anything like you suggest.

Xabi would not like what you suggested. Don't ask why.
