  • Great debut from nat phillips. composed, great in the air, no nonsense ... He looks like a really decent 3rd CB at worst ...
  • Shaq again adds something in our midfield ...
  • Jota scores again ... Salah'esque debut streak
  • Take away a debatable penalty and stupid ass gomez header, our defense has been really solid since VvD went down ... Like what I'm seeing.
  • Is there any reason why Firmino starts against Man City? Jota - Salah - Mane will scare the shit out of Pep and co
  • Since Aston Villa, we should be 3-0-0 ... Great response.

Shaq... I thought it made sense for him to leave, but man, I'd glad he's here and contributing. That kind of eye for a through-pass is pure God-given talent and is exactly what you need to unlock a deep defense, like West Ham's. He was the difference.

He's won us two games now in a row with key passes.

Only him, Thiago and Firmino (on form) have the ability to play that sort of cute (short) pass in this team.

I've always liked Phillips. I must admit I expected him to end up somewhere like Burnley, because he's quite an old school type of CB, but very good and reliable. He probably doesn't suit, ideally, a more expansive kind of team where the CBs bring the ball out of defence, but he's an intelligent guy and it's good to see him play.

Any chance they give him a new contract and he signs it despite now 'showing' he can play at this level?

Ratings:

Alisson 6 – almost nothing to do, but looked sharp coming off his line. His presence alone makes a huge difference.
Trent 7 – back in form; his crossing was on. Made a couple of important defensive interventions as well. Wish he would shoot more from open play.
Phillips 7 MOM – won almost every header and made no mistakes; everything you could ask from a player making his Premier League debut.
Gomez 6.5 – we know that heading is not his strength, so it's not a surprise that it was his undoing for the goal. Good otherwise.
Robbo 6.5 – not as active in attack as Trent, but it's worth noting he's played almost every minute of every game for us this season in a high-energy position. Heart of the team.
Henderson 6.5 – did everything right, but his role was generally more functional than creative. Did play a couple of great passes from deep.
Wijnaldum 6.5 – started quietly and his tendency to hold on to the ball wasn't helpful when we were crying out for faster tempo. Did up the intensity closer to the end of the first half, started driving at the West Ham defense and forcing them to tackle and foul him.
Curtis Jones 6 – seemed to be trying too hard to be neat and "team-oriented" in his first Premier League start this season, but that's to be expected. Hopefully with more minutes and confidence he can start showing the swagger and creativity we all know he has.
Salah 6.5 – won the penalty somewhat theatrically (but correctly) and put it away with confidence. Didn't have much space to run into, but kept trying to find it.
Firmino 6 – I think some of the criticism is overboard; he did his job holding up the ball and connecting our attack. Unfortunately didn't offer any goal threat himself, which is sadly becoming the norm.
Mane 5.5 – one of his weakest games in recent memory. Didn't do anything against Coufal on the left and not much better on the right after the subs.

Subs:
Jota 7 – his running and hunger for goals were once again the difference. People will want him to start, but I'm not yet sure in what system he can play with Salah and Mane that would suit everyone. Klopp will surely be thinking about coming up with one.
Shaqiri 7 – moved deeper into midfield in a Lallana/Jones role where his marvelous eye for a pass makes him stand out from all the other candidates. Will definitely make Klopp think about giving him more playing time.
Milner n/a

Klopp 8 – brave choices for starting lineup and correct subs that won the game. Guiding the team through a really tricky injury situation with a calm and steady hand, making good use of all the available resources at his disposal.

Firmino will definitely start.

This is you being great on this site (you frustrate me on the double-think re lack of clarity in Minamino orders, etc) .

Spot on. Absolutely spot on. Succinct, accurate, well-meaning. Fucking ace

I think both parties came to the same conclusion in the summer that at 23 he really needs to play, so I suspect that it's the same now. But he's a bit like Divok in that he's quite chilled and has interests outside of footie, so if any defender has the mentality to stay around, it's him. It would represent a very risk-aversive move, as the coaches obviously know him really well, he's very professional (he comes from a footballing family so he grew up knowing how it all works), and very well-liked. I think if the club said he really would figure in the rotations that will happen this season, he'd certainly sign at least a short term deal.

The unbeaten home record has been equalled. Next up at Anfield in the league. Podge Brodge.

Suppose he'll get plenty of opportunity to prove he's worth a new contract now. Chances are he'll get a chance to play with both Matip and Gomez due to injury and rotation.

Phillips has a great game but it seemed to play to his strengths allowing him to use his aerial prowess.
I am not so convinced that a team that keeps the ball on the deck might not expose him a bit more.
Though I cant really say that I am overly familiar with his strengths and weaknesses.
