post match Cardiff

Just seen the post match match interview with Ole, it's satisfying to know how we are getting at utd every time we beat one of their stooges

I don't want to put a damper on things or incur the wrath of KHL but I am surprised that nobody has mentioned Agger.
He was at least partly responsible for two of the goals yesterday.
He was caught in no mans land a bit for Campbell's goal and when he closed him down he invited Campbell to cut back inside and in doing so significantly improve the shooting angle. He was also in no man's land for the third goal moving out of and then partly retreating back into, the space from which Mutch scored from.
I wouldn't be surprised to see Sakho start against Sunderland

He was standing exactly where he was supposed to stand. Flanagan wasn't.
Also where was the cover from our defensive midfielder?
I'm not absolving Agger, his fault was losing a one on one situation. But ideally another player should have been there to block his attempt at goal.

I don't get how he was standing where he was meant to be standing for the 2nd goal

2 players didn't need to mark the player in the centre. Agger could see the massive gap.

... agenda ... and the now all too common shot at Gerrard ...

Just shows how much you know about defending LTW.

I advise you to see the goal again after viewing the following images.

1. The build up starts with Flanagan marking Campbell. Allen is looking at their number 35 and Mutch isn't much of a threat. Gerrard isn't getting involved.

2. Allen switched to Mutch. Flanagan points to Gerrard as to say, pick up Frasier Campbell, but Gerrard is expecting Flanagan to mark him.

3. Campbell gets the pass, Agger moves out to cover. Neither Gerrard nor Flanagan are running back to help Agger. Even if they did it would be too late.

4. Campbell is smart, instead of turning right onto Agger's left foot, he goes inwards and shoots. Agger can't keep up.
Johnson manages to get back into the area and here's where I believe a second player should have been to cover that shot.

5. Agger, Gerrard, Skrtel are all looking at Flanagan. Gerrard even shouted at Flanno.

"shows how much I know about defending" ... yah, don't know what your level was - I hope as high as Ryan before you preach - but last time I checked, you had Skrtel and Agger on one player ... Is that Gerrard's fault too? Agger, when he gets up after Campbell breezes by him (Let's not get into why this defending was a bit poor too), screams at Flanno ... Going by your analysis above, I guess he doesn't know much about defending either. Oh well.

That goal was a combination of Agger and Gerrard. Agger was too close to Skrtel. A couple of yards to the left and Campbell doesn't have the freedom to waltz into the area and do as he pleases. Small margins. Gerrard didn't track the run. Flanagan had a man on the outside too so had to try and split them

And looking at the pictures again, the defence should shift across. Johnson should be closer to Skrtel, Skrtel should be marking the man in the middle, and Agger should be in that gap behind Flanagan covering the space where Campbell runs into.

You obviously don't know much about defending either ... Especially as you also thought ShiteLB, a player Modo defended, was crap.

Soz, don't mean to denigrate your opinion. I'm no expert myself and I can say stupid things but in this case claiming that it's agenda driven and just a dig at Gerrard is a bit too much. Like I said part of the blame is Agger's but it's shared with Gerrard and Flanagan.
Agger was definitely at fault for the third goal.

Haha in fairness to Modo I don't remember him defending Cissokho? To be honest, if I hadn't watched him in Valencia a good few times I would have thought it would have been a good signing based on his reputation and past performances.

Listen, I know Agent KHL has you defending Agger's honor until he returns to celebrate #19.

I just think Agger was poor on defending Campbell in the box - but yes, I can accept that all 3 could have done much better on the goal (I don't think Flanno had much of an option though -> Hal is right, the whole defensive line should have shifted, which is something Mign should have also been screaming).

The whole defence there is all over the place. Just like much of the season. At first glance, though, it does look like an Agger/Flanagan individual error.

Modo is spot on.

Re "Just shows how much you know about defending LTW"?
I agree. LTW is no big expert when it comes to defending and to football in general!....

😉

I'm only joking. Just shit stirring a bit... No offence please!!!
The lads have given me so many reasons to be in a good mood recently. I'm so happy with football again!

the sad football geek that i am , i was looking again at the goals we conceded in slow mo and frankly all three are shocking , mistakes are made by a number of players for each .

for the one above . Coutinho and allen don't get close enough to the man with the ball . Gerrard doesn't drop . Flannagan doesn't know whether to stick or cover the man on the touchline . He steps at the exact wrong moment when the ball is passed and is caught wrong footed . Agger is facing the play , he should have stepped up earlier and left sktrel with the striker . Johnson should have been closer to them and been able to cover skrtel . Agger doesn't go straight for campbell , he drops way too deep for my liking and then doesn't try and force campbell to one side , he faces him straight on allowing campbell inside too easily. A shambles all round.

look , i don't know really anymore what to think on the defensive side of this team . Rodgers , in public at least, doesn't appear too concerned but personally conceding sloppy goals like we do drives me mad . They are preventable and it feels a little un-professional that we still make these mistakes . If our forward play continues to bail us out then i'll happily acknowledge my fears were mistaken but usually in football a poor defence will come back to haunt you .
