Pre Match Pre Match - PL - Bournemouth (H) - Friday 20:00

Also on Sunday Kerkez (in what was the biggest game of his career) should have had a lovely assist to Mo, and made a goal saving block in our box. If that is part of a bad performance, i'd happily see more of them.
Positioning was poor for second goal - too far away from Virgil and the ball easily passed through the gap - but otherwise I thought he was good.

My mate Julian Fothergill thinks Kerkez is shit but I disagree - I just think it might make sense to make one less change right now. There's no great hurry to have all the new signings play at once.

Yeah, you're right. We should terminate his contract immediately. My bad.

In all seriousness I thought he was quite good against Palace bar the miscommunication with Gakpo and when to follow Sarr or not.
Great pace, fearless, good with the ball, linked up well and had a few great crosses.
Very close to an assist at the end.

Very promising and an excellent signing.

Can't imagine Hughes and Slot selling Kerkez last season on the plans for him in our team this season, how he's going to fit in, how we're going to use him, expand his game, etc. short of promising to start him, and then turning around to bench him on the back of a couple of pre-season games.

I think it's safe to expect Slot to continue to go with Kerkez to start the season. Personally, I'd prefer that; have to be fair to the guy and the mates around him and give them some time to work together on the pitch, and be ready to make in-game adjustments quickly as events unfold.

And I do wonder how much of that occasional positional issue last weekend arose because there were already 3 or 4 guys in the space he wanted to bomb into.

Yeah, good point. It will probably look foolish at times while we adjust the tactical set up to the new players, and they get used to each other.
Thats kinda why its a shame we havent got one more pre season game to play the back 5 and work on it.
Hopefully it will settle quickly.

Team Brizzle posted.

I got my prediction abysmally wrong vs Palace (may not have been if Mo. had put away that easy chance) however I think the forwards will get a lot more success against a much weakened Bournemouth defence.

Virgil's form will improve along with his health. The defence will have benefited from the Palace game. And Slot will know what instructions to give them.

At home under the lights. 4-0

No no, he was out of position a few times in the last game. He's awful don't you know.
It was more than that. All Palace had to do was a lob a ball down that left hand side and they had tons of space to run into and cross. It was happening again and again. It was not just on Kerkez but on Slot also. Almost as if Ange had taken over coaching our left hand side.

----------------------Ali----
---Frimpong--Konate--VVD--Robbo
-------------Szobo----Jones----------
--------Salah-----Wirtz-----Gakpo-
-----------------Ekitike------------

Given our left side challenges against Bournemouth, I'd welcome Robbo coming in for some balance. We need to be more stable at the back. Macca also looked way off it.

Rest picks itself.

First game of the season, here we go.

Slightly disappointing end to the Palace game - but it was the opposite of last season's trends which was stale first half, electric second. Will be interesting to see if we evolve to better starts this season.

I'd play same team except for Macca coming in for Jones.

Alisson

Frimpong
Konate
Virgil
Kerkez

Szobo
Macca
Wirtz

Salah
Ekitike
Gakpo

Bournemouth have lost 4 of their back 5 from last season, plus Kluivert is out too. If we go at them from the start, their new defence should crumble. LFG.
Swap in Robbo and then probably Jones until Macca is more fit.

Kerkez would've been boss under Klopp, tailor made for his style. Strong runner, loves to bomb up and down the flank and get as many crosses into the box.

With Arne I don't know whether he sees something we don't, whether he's trying to experiment with something unique or if he just prefers having 1 of his fullbacks narrow and closer to the CB's than the touchline, but I can't say it's worked at all. Other players are tasked with exerting more energy to cover space (not Gakpo's or Wirtz's forte).

I get he wants everyone to be able to be comfortable on the ball and play out, but surely we can do that with Ali/Virg/Ibou/Grav/Mac and not involve Kerkez so much, there were a few times he got forward and offered a pass in behind (without much joy it has to be said) but this system makes our LB way too static for large parts.

Munoz had 6 crosses all game, 2 of which connected with a Palace player. It happened a few times, not again and again.

I was going through the highlights of the Palace game, and saw two of the occasions when that happened. The positioning of Kerkez was so deep infield and Gakpo so withdrawn (as to be in the fullback position) that I think this has to be more on Slot than the player(s).

If Kerkez were an inexperienced player, I'd be more willing to pin it on him, but as he's not, I think it was more coaching instructions. Further, Gakpo seemed prepared and knew where to be (Munoz's pace subsequently made Gakpo look bad in a foot race), so that makes me think that it's more of a coaching thing.

That's not to say that this is how Slot intends to play this season. It might be him taking the opportunity of a higher-intensity pre-season game to put some ideas to the test, or just a tactical adjustment for the opponent (in response to last season's games against them perhaps) that backfired. I think we'll have to see in the games ahead whether this rears its ugly head again, and if it happens with a different LB playing.
