Liverpool boss dumps SIXTEEN backroom staff

By CHRIS BASCOMBE, 06/06/2009

LIVERPOOL are facing a legal backlash after dismissing an incredible SIXTEEN backroom staff as part of the increasingly bloody Anfield Rafalution.
The club sacked 10 Academy staff last week and another six long-serving employees left in the last few days.

Distressed former employees with well over 150 years service between them argue they've been given no valid reason for the termination of contracts and are unhappy with the club's first offers for pay-off packages.

Liverpool are now braced for a series of courtroom challenges to the decision, with most of those sacked preparing unfair dismissal claims.

The Merseyside club face massive compensation bills and that's come at the worst possible time for owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett given their perilous financial situation.

Liverpool argue most of the dismissals are a series of cost-cutting measures overseen by new finance director Philip Nash, particularly at Academy level, with the club trying to reduce staff expenses by up to as much as £2million a year.

Benitez plans to replace some of them by adding to the Spanish contingent at Anfield.

A Kop source said: "You've heard of the night of the long knives. This is more like two weeks of it and it may not be finished yet.

"Rafa wants a clean sweep, but some of the staff won't go quietly and are taking legal advice. Some of them don't even feel they've been told why they're going."

The first round of departures included reserve coach Gary Ablett, Academy director Piet Hamberg and youth coaches Dave Shannon and Hugh McAuley.

Shannon will have a strong claim against the club having been cited in the recent autobiographies of Steven Gerrard, Robbie Fowler, Michael Owen and Jamie Carragher as a major influence on their careers through the youth ranks.

In recent days the departure of six Melwood staff has been confirmed, including physio Victor Salinas, the club's players' liaison officer who has been at Liverpool for 14 years, and even the kit man.

Me thinks Bascombe is pissed as most of his sources have been kicked out now.

To be honest a few of those names piss me off that they're going too. If Rafa is planning on replacing a few with a Spanish contingent then you have to question the suggestion that it is H&G inspired. Whoever it is most people know its very rarely a successful strategy to do it in bits; morale drops and the place can implode. If you have a lot do do its best to make the first cut the heaviest.

Still not happy about Shannon or Ablett.

It's a tough one for anyone to judge too, seeing as we won't know the result of this move, whether it be positive or negative, for a good few years.
I'm all for changes though at Academy level.

I think it's a great move.

Those Academy backroom staff should be ashamed of some of the dross they've rolled out over the last few years.

The last names (Gerrard, Fowler and Owen) to come out of that shit hole were nigh on 10 years ago.

Fuckin disgrace for a club of our allure and resources.

I think one 'decent' player every 3 or 4 years is more than fair a return.... given the huge investment.

I agree with you about some of them being good servants of the club - what, for example, Gard has done wrong, or Shannon, is beyond me - but that's a typical Bascombe slur about the 'Spanish contingent'. As far as I can see one Spaniard has been brought in and one has been let go. Without telling us of any more, he's shoehorned in a typically cheap little dig at the second manager in succession who refuses to treat him like a mate. It's so childish.

It is indeed sad that coaches whom Carra, Gerrard have cited in their books as good influences are being sacked. There are a lot of faithful servants of the club who are loosing their jobs. But the article would have been much better if Bascombe had focused on those people instead of making it sound as if Rafa is removing all the old guard and replacing them with his Spanish mates.

Salinas, Nus and Vales are Spaniards whose contracts are not being renewed as opposed to being sacked. Same with Ablett, Hamberg and De Koning. Dittmar has not been an academy coach for 8 years, more like 5. More knowledgeable posters on other sites have pointed out that couple of others years of service have been inflated.

As you indicated Macca, I would love to know why Shannon, Guard, Divine, Wright are being sacked. But around 6 to 7 of them
are at the end of their contracts and I am not sure how they are going to sue the club. Of course why let facts come in the way of a good story.

I fail to see why any of this is bad news.

Quite the opposite. I think it might be a good thing.
