Rio

I'd be surprised if he played more than 300 mins of first team football - a decent little taster of things to come, he'll end up playing more with the u21s unless he's sent on loan, which I can't see us doing even if it'd be kinda cool to track his progress and I reckon he could rip it up and hold his own most weeks in the championship.

Far too many players who play loads of footy at a young age end up tailing off massively later in their careers. The boy, and he is a boy, is still growing and should be used sparingly. It's a shame, because he looks ready to go, but we need to manage his minutes for the sake of his long-term career.
I worry similarly about Yamal - too much too soon.

Yeah a loan makes no sense. We're talking about protecting him and then send him on loan to play 30-40 games in the Championship or for a lower PL club?!

A 16-18 yo should be at the club being indoctrinated with our style and coaching.

Surely a lot has to depend on the player themselves. how they're genetially built and how they look after themselves? Foden or Saka for instance weren't that much older and are still going fine 5-6 seasons later. Sterling albeit on a slightly lesser scale, another example. Rio has to be looking at Nwaneri who's arguably the best u21 winger in the country and seeing the game time he had as a 17 year old.

Finding the balance is the most important thing with these kids, because too many years isolated with the u21s with minimal minutes is worse than being tested early.

Rio should under no circumstance be taken to the WC at that age. Protect him and let us handle his development.

Just making a left field prediction, if he gets some hype from appearances he makes then it isn't beyond the realms that an england manager takes someone like him in the squad as a PR stunt

Sadly I agree. Let’s hope common sense prevails. Reminds me of Walcott in 2006. So unnecessary.

But Sterling is the example, isn't he. Looked fine then for years then fell off a cliff. He's a shadow of the player he used to be.
As I recall, City were cautious with Foden and managed his minutes early doors, but he's dropped off too (possibly not a physical thing though).
Owen, Fowler, Giggs, even Gerrard struggled for years with what we were told were "growing pains". All of them were playing regularly at 17/18. Don't get me started on Rob Jones - fucking tragic what happened to him / his career.
Barca pumped Messi full of HGH and even then they used him sparingly when he first started out.
Saka might just be the exception, but when he finally broke last season it cost Arsenal any chance of mounting a serious challenge. I think they've been forced to play him to some extent because he's their best attacker by a country mile. Real test will be how he recovers this season, but I don't expect him to go on another 100+ game streak or whatever it was.

I know, I know it's too soon for comparisons, but he did remind me a little of the great John Barnes when he was running with the ball for his goal

assuming raheem doesn’t have any abnormal medical issues in the future has it really been that terrible to have his career start and end earlier?

Sterling may've tailed off the last few years but the lad to his credit has scored over 120 goals in the Prem, I'd take that for Rio anyday.

It's like people nowadays aren't happy unless there's some miracle way they can replicate 20 years of Messi/Ronaldo levels.

I can imagine that any full back will be in for a tough test and I expect Rio as and when he appears to win plenty of free kicks.

In addition at 16 he has a few years growth to go so he will get stronger to add to his pace and skill.

He's chomping at the bit. He's clearly torturing our defenders in training and screaming for a chance. Yes, he shouldn't be a starter, but a regular bench option and cup game starter, yes –100%.

Raheem *has* fallen off a cliff, but tricky wing forwards very often do. If Barca can play a young generational talent every week, then we should surely at least give the guy plenty of minutes here and there. He looks good enough to make a difference, and imagining him coming on to run at tired FBs 70 minutes into a match against a team that will already have given them a lot of running to do, has me rubbing my hands in anticipation.

i think this is it. i’d worry if we were trying to start him every game and i’d also be concerned if he was getting zero opportunity. we can always tailor his training too and make it less intensive if needed.

Legend has it, that this is the reason Trent decided to leave.

With Foden, I don't think it is a physical issue. Some players are excellent support casts and are not able to step up when the headline guitarists and lead vocalists step down or lose their "it" factor. I have a similar feeling about Elliott. When we are on song, he is a great player to come in and add more to the symphony. But they are not floor lifters.

i call them maxi rodriguezs, they look great in a highly functioning side but drop them into a side with a few problems then they’re not going to be part of any solution.

This reminds me of Barkley's comments on Durant and bus drivers.

Foden did an interview late in the season when he said he'd had some ligament issues and mental struggles.

"It's been a frustrating season for me. I've had a lot of things going on off the pitch mentally," the 24-year-old said. "It's one of them, sometimes there's things in life that are bigger than football. This season I've struggled a little bit. Hopefully come next year I can get my head mentally right, get back where I left the season before because I know what I'm capable of doing and the quality I have.

"I know if everything was okay I'd definitely be better on the field. Sometimes things happen and you have to deal with it and move on. Unfortunately I've had a difficult season. Now it's just about improving and getting back to my best. I know my standards and what I can reach. I'm looking forward to getting back."

"I somehow managed to play on with my ligaments done [against United]," he said. "That's the kind of person I am. I try and play on with anything. I remember how much pain I felt when the adrenaline died down. I missed the next game or two, came back to training quite early.

"A lot of people don't know what football players have to go through and play with. I've had a lot of ankle pain and playing with it in the last couple of months. Some people don't see what we go through, it's frustrating for me because I know it's been hard to get it right. You need time for it to heal but me being me I just love to come back on the football pitch as soon as possible.

The difference with Sterling and Rio is that Sterling was coming into a team that had limited quality. He ended up getting the minutes based not on his level of abilty but the lack elsewhere in the team.

This kid won't have that issue, he's good enough but he's not taking a place in the starting line up off Gakpo or Hugo, so we can give him chances and build experience without running him into the ground.

Maybe he shouldn’t have had 7 kids. 2 give me mental struggles.

There's still time - he can't sign a pro deal until the end of the month when he turns 17.
