Sami Hyypia steps into management

I read an article a couple weeks back saying that Leverkusen could be 'the next Dortmund'.

Pleased for Sami. It'd be great to have him back one day.

Him, Gerrard and Carragher are players I will be banging on about to my grandkids to in 60 years time.

If there wasn't some management tales to tell, I'd be disappointed.

He was working in tandem with Sasha Lewandowski last season, but from this season he is alone at the helm and Lewandowski is coaching the youth team. Seems to be doing well so far, 3 games 3 wins. It will be interesting to see how he does in the Champions League.

Fuck me, how old are you?!!

Glad Sami's doing well. Love the man and his defensive headers always shocked me. The power he could generate standing still was phenomenal.

Sami and Carra should indeed make excellent managers - who knows, maybe for us one day. Not sure about Stevie G.

[article=http://www.bild.de/sport/fussball/sami-hyypiae/es-kann-hier-schnell-wieder-fuer-mich-vorbei-sein-32662324.bild.html]Leverkusen boss Sami Hyypia has claimed it would be a "dream" to manage former club Liverpool in the future.

The Finn spent 10 years at Anfield, winning the UEFA Champions League during his stint with the club, before starting his managerial career at the BayArena in 2012 after ending his playing days with the German side.

Leverkusen finished third in the Bundesliga under Hyypia last season and have started the new domestic campaign strongly, winning six of their seven games to sit third behind Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich.

While Hyypia remains committed to the cause at Leverkusen, he has stated his desire to manage both Liverpool and the Finland national side.
"I have got two special places in my heart," he told Bild.

"I was born in Finland, and there the job as the national team coach is the biggest job. Liverpool has the other place in my heart.

"I don’t want to say, 'That's my goal', but - after the 10 years I played there - it would also be a dream to one day be the Liverpool manager.

"I live in the here and now, and that means Bayer Leverkusen, which gives me a lot of pleasure."

Leverkusen picked up their first win of this season's UEFA Champions League group stage on Wednesday thanks to a 2-1 success over Real Sociedad.

Hyypia's side can also move top of the Bundesliga on Saturday with a win over champions Bayern Munich, provided leaders Borussia Dortmund drop points against Borussia Monchengladbach.[/article]

Let's face it, he's not proven himself more than Moyes has so far, probably less. Wonderful man, but you'll be saying he's fast next.

I don't think anyone is saying he's proven or ready yet. But it would be great if he one day was.

No, BR is a better manager at this point in their respective careers. But I think Sami will have a good or at least decent career as a manager. Maybe the best out of all players who played for us since Rafa arrived. Will it lead him to Liverpool? Nobody knows.

when we hired Brendan, his CV wasn't exactly that great. It was his first season in top flight management, no?

Hyppia, by contrast, has already led a club to 3rd in one of the top leagues in europe. my point initially was that Hyppia has done more at this point in his career than BR did when we hired BR.

Brendan's first season it top flight? Are you serious?

2nd, I can't remember now, but the point is he has not exactly set the top flight alight.
The football world was very impressed with what Rodgers did at Swansea. A newly-promoted side that punched above its weight in the Premier League, not by "parking the bus" but by playing lovely football.

I dont know if Sami's 3rd place with Bayer is more impressive than Rodgers' 11th with Swansea in a much more competitive league. Bayer had the squad good enough for a 3rd place, they did very well, but I wouldnt say they overachieved the way Swansea overachieved with Rodgers. Also don't forget that Sami was not the head coach last season; he was part of the coaching duo with Sacha Lewandowski who was officially the head coach (although I read that when they disagreed, Sami had the last word).

So this season is officially the first for Sami as a head coach and he has a lot to prove - and so far he seems to be doing really well.

fair point, but taking leverkusen to 3rd in the league as a relatively inexperienced manager is, imo, probably a higher achievement.

Brendan was way ahead in terms of coaching experience, and ahead too in terms of management. But I hope Sami really does well.

To me, it's incredible that such a strong and effective CB could go through a whole season in the Premier League without picking up a single yellow card.

Defenders don't have the same glamour as forwards, but he was one of Liverpool's greatest-ever players and his name deserves to be right up there when people discuss club legends.

I felt very sorry for him when he was stripped of the captaincy. If Gerrard had posessed outstanding captaincy skills, it would have had some logic but I don't think he does.

It was a strange decision at the time and I agree with you about Gerrard's qualities.
Having said that Stevie consistenly improved himself from that time and became better every season. I'd like to think that was because of the captaincy and the responsibilities he believed came with the territory.
And it was also a testament to Hyppia's incredible character that he continued to play as a world class cb and have the strength to still be a true captain at the back.
Have so much respect for the guy.

Wasn't it related to stories about drinking too much, also I remember an interview with him saying it was a relief to have the local lads take over the high profile roles?

Typical of Sami to 'step' into management. No pace, you see. He should be sprinting into management, or at least jogging into it.

Sami drinking too much? It's the first time I hear about it.
