I thought he'd gone on a perm transfer, the article suggests loan:

http://www.insidefutbol.com/2011/02/13/former-liverpool-defender-mikel-san-jose-targeted-by-barcelona/37351/

It won't let me drag and drop the article.

We did sell him.

http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/news/latest-news/defender-deal-agreed

Liverpool today confirmed they have agreed a permanent deal with Athletic Bilbao for Mikel San Jose.

The 20-year-old will complete the transfer back to Spain when his loan with the La Liga club expires in June.

San Jose originally arrived at Anfield from Bilbao in the summer of 2007.

The Spanish U21 international was a regular in the Reserves and figured for the first team during last summer's pre-season preparations.

However, he returned to San Mames on loan last August in a bid to gain more senior experience.

yet another pointless youth signing by the hapless benitez.

although, tbf maybe pretty daft to let him go - surely we have some sort of option or sell-on clause for him, right? terrible business if we don't and he goes on to great things. has anyone watched him play much in spain?

LFC didn't need an FD m8, we needed a manager. rafa was a gr8 coach but a shit manager. he lost us the league in 2009 by getting us our highest points total in 20 years; populating the squad with dross like san jose and then letting them go for a profit was a crucial factor in us being worse than man utd and chelsea throughout his time here, except when we beat chavs twice in CL semi-finals we got lucky in.

Many of the early youth signings did seem to be a case of 'hit and hope' - the Antwis, Huths, Roques etc.

I think we're supposed to laugh here as Pete is taking the piss of those who had issues with Rafa's youth policy ... Great thread to defend him in too - a thread where one of the kids that many were raving about was sold for a small profit and is now interesting the best team in the world!

I remember some of Rafa's most ardent supporters (I wasn't 'ardent' but was defo a supporter back then) complaining about many of the draws we had in that 2009 season ("Liverpool won't have a chance like this under Rafa again," said that cunt in Manchester) due to defensive approach ... Oh well, better 2nd and 7th the next year than Roy Hodgson I still say!

i already alluded to the POSSIBLE error in letting him go IF there's no kind of option/sell-on, but if there is one it wouldn't be - so don't be a ditz!

it would've been best just to ignore me mark.

btw, he didn't buy hundreds of youth players.

and the policy OBVIOUSLY wasn't based around the notion that ALL of them reach their potential. only a very very stupid person would think that's possible.

correct, he bought millions!

Of those 100's he bought how many did we make a profit on? Would be intresting to see, I believe we came out with profits for the majority.

I've heard this argument before, about his first team signings... "They might have been shit but we made a profit on them, so well done Rafa".

Errr, no.

woOOOOO HOOOOOOO profit baby

But this isn't an argument about first team signings is it? Its about youth signings isn't? Now if the club can unearth a gem then thats brilliant, but if not the next thing for the youth academy is to genrate profit for the club. I think they are 2 completly different arguments.

Isn't that what most clubs do though? Most teams in the Prem bring young players through the ranks (or purchased youth players) and find that they will make it in lower leagues. Given the fees involved at the ages of 16/17 (or younger) for the most obscure signings, it's always likely they will fetch a greater fee as they get older, the fact they're at a Premiership club in the first place inflates their value anyway.

I'm afraid you might've been too optimistic, mate, esp. when other expenses like wages are taken into consideration. Take San Jose for example, we spent 300k to sign him. Bilbao turned his loan into a permanent move and despite rumours of a potential 3m fee, I would be really surprise if thats the actual figure, given the fact that his contract was expiring at the end of that very season.

As it stands now you'd have to say that Rafa's record with regards to our youngsters was pretty poor. Saying that, seeing how long it can take for a club to reap the rewards from this area, that record could quickly change over the next couple of years.

His youth record was poor, but I think the 'foundation' he built will eventually make us forget that as our youth set up will be amongst the best in the world.

don't confuse him. he obviously still doesn't realise that in that previous argument he had with me about net spend/the value of recouping fees, i so totally wiped the floor with him that i felt a bit ashamed of myself. it was like beating a man-child at poker.

Post it.

You're so fucking intellectually superior and you were so 'right' about it that you wiped the floor with me, post it, you obnoxious fucking cunt.

At least Brendan, for all his "I'm so superior" attitude, had endearing qualities. You've just proven in this thread how much of an arrogant twat you are.

yeah, tbf you have a point. i remember one xmas when i was about 11 my aged grandma had a go at me and my cousin annie for looking 'superior and rotten' - my quick as a flash response was 'well, i am superior, so that follows.'

oh, how we laughed! i blame the parents, personally. you should talk to mr moo, btw, who you seem to so object to: he can tell you how harsh i can be when i don't engage my brain. you'd like him.

so sorry - i can be obnoxious, no doubt at all. and i always regret it a minute later - quick temper and a harsh tongue, bad combination, absolutely. i'm learning, though, and i don't mind apologising, because basically i like almost all people in real life, and am not -generally- a cunt.

so: friends, sort of?

PS this counts towards the other sneering post i made in the suarez thread, so you're not getting another one.

JAMIE CARRAGHER could cost England tonight after Spain defender Mikel San Jose credited the Liverpool star with teaching him everything he knows.

San Jose spent three years at Anfield before joining Athletic Bilbao last summer and, as his Under-21s side prepare to take on the Young Lions, he says Carragher is the man he should thank if Spain keep a clean sheet.

He said: "The time I spent at Liverpool was incredible. It was difficult to understand Carragher's accent for a while but there are other ways of communicating.

"He taught me everything. He taught me how to use my size and my body effectively and how to deal with different types of strikers.

"The aggression was something I had to learn and he made sure I learned well."

I wont believe that until I see him hoofing the ball aimlessly for 90 minutes only to follow up by sticking the ball into his own net in the next round, thats what a 20 year old Carra was all about
