Save Our Season

Slot needs to stop playing the high line and be more compact. He is complaining teams play the long ball but does nothing to combat it.
Neither Konate or VVD are fast enough to stop a through ball or a ball over the top. We can't seem to retain the ball which is huge problem and we lack the speed on the wings to catch teams off-guard
Slot needs to stop using 4-3-3 its not working
Play a back 3,5 in the middle as thats where we get over run and two up front. Chiesa, Morrison and Rio need to be used more. We need a 6, we get over crowded in the middle

On a superstitious note I think we go on a winning spree from now.

Apart from Conte's Chelsea, have there ever been any other team that have succeeded with a back three in the last three decades in England?
The only team currently doing that are the Mancs.

We have 3 fit CBs, one of which will be crippled in a few weeks. It's not worth taking up space on the internet discussing it.

What we do need is Robertson and Bradley holding their depth and midfielders who can keep the ball and control a football game. Jones and Szobo are by far the best at doing that, and I'd consider putting Endo behind them for some stability. We need to tear it all down and rebuild from the back. Wirtz can play off the flanks in the meantime. It's not like Gakpo or Salah are doing great.

Fixing our season is doing this:

- Taking stock of the excellent players we have and finding a formation that makes us stable, boring and gives a platform to dominate an oppponent.

- We signed one of the highest rated attacking mids in world football

- We signed a CF near his peak (might have already peaked, we won't know for a couple of years)

- We signed a hugely promising looking CF

- We already have 3 - 4 excellent midfielders

I think it is truly the time to forget about wide forwards, and use these two players as centre forwards, who are allowed to drift wide.

It is 442 Diamond time baby! DM CM CM AM

Ali / Marmasdash

Bradders / Frim
Ibu / Gomez
VVD / no one (cries)
Kerkez / Robbo

Gravy / Endo
Macca / Jones
Szobo / Nyoni
Wirtz / Chiesa

Isak / Ekitike
Salah / Gakpo

In this formation we get very close to having two options in every position - we will have 2 strikers who will always be miffed to be on the bench, but this allows us to really dial in a new formation and approach.

Based on the opposition we can be more solid by putting Szobo as the AM, with 3 of the other DM/CMs. If required we can chuck a third striker on for an AM.

I think this is essential for bringing on, possibly even two bodies into the middle. The CMs have the role of supporting the full back. the DM acts like a third CB at times.

At this stage, I genuinely don't see any other way to make progress with the team we have. Look forward 1 - 2 seasons and we could have Isak & Ekitike up front having successfully put in a succession plan for Mo.

I think Mo can work in this formation, because at this stage we officially remove his defensive responsibilties.

Why wouldn't we do this?

But if they were getting more support from the midfield off the ball, and given a bit more remit attacking wise, maybe it could work? Who knows.

Possibly.

The whole situation is very very odd. We're sticking with variations of 4-2-3-1 / 4-3-3 but we've not bought for that kind of system... or any kind of system if we're honest and that's probably why everyone is kinda wondering "how the fuck can we make this work". There is no obvious solution.

Part of the problem with the shitness of the full backs is asking them to bomb on and then we scratch our heads when we need them to go the opposite direction.

Go with a flatter back four, be smarter when they do go forward. Have a midfield trio from Gravy, Slobs, Mac, Jones and even Endo (even I laugh at slot starting him). Wirtz had his most productive game on that floaty right so put him there. Ekitike has been our best CF, stick him there. Then Chiesa or Gakpoo on the left.

Our full backs are not shit.

One, a lot of us wanted to start over trent last year, and the other was left back of the year last year. Not to mention Robbo, and the 40m signing everyone was swooning over being back ups.

All on board with this.

Hard to see Salah working on the flank anymore, but he'd still be lethal nearer the box, and he'd probably prefer it to.

We can also have Isak and Ekitike playing together which seems eminently sesnsible.
