Sell, Hold, Keep List - The autopsy of our squad

If there can be a positive from last night, it means Herr Klopp can significantly trim the fat from our average squad, while only adding those who he feels will improve our squad. Shouldn't be too hard. However there will be slim pickings from rival Premier League clubs from their players, 1st teamers will not be sold from any team to us as the finances now mean they don't have too.

Sell List - Those who simply must go, preferably on a bogof, but I don't mind what value we get from them, they drag down our soul.

Simon Mignolet - Last night summed up his career for us, one world class save in a game, but shakey and lacks both commanding presence and distribution

Adam Bogdan - He was a free, he was a 2nd choice goalkeeper in the championship... on a free. Think about it!

Alberto Moreno - There is no denying he has flair, he's likeable, he's no slouch. However, he goes MIA more often than not. Twice he messed up for that goal last night, if it was a one off he would be forgiven, however I can't be the only one who gets a squeaky bum every time the ball goes near him defensively

Martin Skrtel - His time has come, will always be a cult hero, well suited to any Italian team who wants him. So long Martin, wish you all the best.

Joe Allen - I feel a bit harsh saying him as for the last quarter of the season he's played ok. However that's the top of his ability which isn't good enough for a top 4 team.

Joao Teixeira - Too lightweight for a prem team, a good championship player or foreign league player

Christian Benteke - We do not play to his strengths, he's not a bad player, a great top 10-15 team player for a team like Stoke, West Ham, West Brom who can play to his strengths.

Kevin Stewart - I don't get it... he's 23, he's not good enough for a 1st team spot.

Thiago Ilori - £7m spent and not close to the first team.

Already Shown The Door - See ya kid!

Jordan Rossiter
Jose Enrique
Jerome Sinclair

Hold - Consider the offer, but unless we have a replacement or cover, hold on for another year or two

Lucas - He's been flirting with the exit door for a few years now, if a serious bid comes in, consider selling him.

Jordan Henderson - He is not great lets be honest.

Jordon Ibe - Started brightly then faded

Adam Lallana - Too wasteful at this level and not ruthless enough.

Keep - Core Squad Players - Don't sell
GK
Danny Ward - Should be number 2, shouldn't go on loan again he's getting beyond that age if he's going to make it with us.

DF
Nathaniel Clyne - Solid but unspectacular first season
Kolo Toure (for one more year)
Mama Sakho (No one will touch him until the ban is lifted)
Dejan Lovren - Should be back up only
Joe Gomez - Would like to see him and Matip in pre season together
Jon Flanagan - should be 2nd choice RB or LB
Brad Smith - Back Up 3rd choice
Connor Randal - Back Up 3rd choice

MF
James Milner - Solid but his best years are behind him
Emre Can - Won't be the next messiah, but good player none the less
Cameron Brannagan - Needs more game time in the first team pelase
Sheyi Ojo - As Brannagan
Sergi Canos - Young and unproven
Pedro Chirivella - - Young and unproven

FW
Divock Origi - Good 2nd half to the season, should be starting up top more often than not
Danny Ings - Good back up option

Hands Off - No senor, I do not want your money for my player

Phillippe Coutinho - Our one genuine player who can unlock the door of any defence.

Firmino - Good start to his LFC career, I expect more next season

Daniel Sturridge - Our one world class forward when fit.

The above leaves us with big holes to fill for 1st team opportunities.

1-2 GK
1-2 CB (Matip already bagged)
1 LB (Would love to see Cresswell come home, but I doubt West Ham will sell)
1-2 CM (See hold list above, already bagged Grujic)
1 Winger (could be a Walcott type player or Marquee signing)
1 Striker

Quite the 1st post. Welcome to the site 🙂

Oh and I'll add Ballo to the list of get the fuck out.

There's Lazar Markovic too and I was kinda interested in seeing what Klopp can do with him but now without European footie next season, we don't need such a big squad. So I don't think there's room in the squad for both him and Ibe.

Not a lot to disagree with there but I would put Can and Origi in the hands off list. Can's first season in the heart of our midfield and he's been good and Origi has shown enough of his potential. They both deserve to be there as much as Firmino.

Sales are usually hard for us so I'm not anticipating loads.

Sell:
Benteke
Its clear he isn't in the plans, so if the right deal is out there we should offload him. That said i think if you can't accomodate a 1 in 2 striker you might need to re-evaluate your approach to games.

Moreno - Just not a good defender. A real product of the modern game.

Allen - injury prone, only good in short spells

Lucas - Just shite.

Toure - let him go. He's as good as you'll get as an experienced 4th choice CB but i think we're better served with giving the 70k a week to someone else.

I don't see Sakho, Lovren, Mignolet as having any value so i don't see us selling either. Milner is probably in that category too.

The majority of our defence can go in my mind.

Keepers:
Sturridge
Origi
Can
Gomez
Coutinho

Younger players in general I suppose.

The if a decent offer comes group:
Henderson, Firmino, Lallana.

Sell.....

Mignolet, Bogdan, Ward, Sakho, Illori, Skrtel, Henderson, Lallana, Allen, Ibe, Teixeira, Benteke, Sturridge, Balotelli, Alberto and Wisdom.

I would be happy if we kept Sturridge but he will never accept being second choice. IMO we will sign a top class striker this summer and Origi is already ahead of him in the pecking order. Can't see him stay so sell.

What about the loanees?

That list is solid but outside of Kolo there's not one of them you'd trust to look after the shop.

I don't think it's so much about rejigging the current squad it's about who we bring in, and the players brought in must be intelligent, calm, experienced and able to handle in-game situations.

We're too easily shaken out of our stride and that is the core problem that needs to be addressed.

Sounds about right for you Modo... you like the boys who look like ladies... Do you live in Bangkok?😉

Wow, some people want to sell pretty much the entire team, apparently. You really think Klopp spent all this time teaching these players to play in his way only to start all over again the next season?

Fair comment, but I do think he'll probably be letting more of them go than he would have anticipated when he initially took the job.

Pace.

Klopp's teams have always been strong at the back and with pace to burn in closing down and then bursting forward.

Pace is one fucking huge missing ingredient in the side he inherited and will be high on his agenda, especially in the wide positions.

Yet to see this skill set in the players we are linked with so I wonder if there will be a few surprises

Is this one of the biggest squads we've had in ages or does it just feel like that because a lot of the reserves have been involved?

Sinclair, Illori, Teixeira, Enrique, Bogdan, Balotelli, Yesil, Rossiter, Wisdom, Yesil

Confirmed departures and 99% certs to go.

Stewart, Smith, Randall

It's good that they've been given a go but they don't look good enough. Hopefully their stints in the first team will get them and us a better transfer than they would've gotten before.

Benteke, Alberto, Markovic

All good players but we either don't have the time or the system to make it work. I think they're all on long contracts and the market is good so we should really be holding out for top fees.

Ibe, Ojo, Brannagan, Canos (if he signs)

I know Klopp said he's not in favour of the loan system but surely nothing can be gained from keeping those guys around for another season to play a few cup games. In the case of Ibe, it's probably last chance saloon and there'd be a temptation to sell this summer if we got a great offer.

Skrtel - it's a bit of a shame that he'll likely leave a bit of a forgotten man after a pretty good career with us

Toure - probably a good time to give up his spot but seems well liked so hopefully can find him another role at the club

Lucas - legs have gone and the time has surely come to move on.

Flannagan - maybe gets a stay of execution but he's looked pretty bad since he's come back and will have to improve massively to stick around.

Sakho - it all rests on what happens with his ban. If we get a decent offer, it'd be very tempting to sell.

That's the easy bit done.

In terms of the first team proper, I want to start the season with:
  • A clear first choice back line with a new GK and a LB

  • A well thought out and balanced midfield that builds on the talents of Can but provides him with the support he needs as well as some much needed composure and ability to link with the attack effectively

  • A forward line that has the right mix of pace, creativity and goals

  • A new captain
Goal: New GK, Ming, Ward

Defence: Matip, Lovren, New CB / Sakho?, Gomez, Clyne, Moreno, New LB, Flannagan?

Midfield: Can, New CM, Grujic, Milner, Allen?, Henderson?

Wasn't there some talk about giving Grujic assurances that he's coming to play? If so, we probably need to bin off one of Allen or Henderson.

Attack: Sturridge, Origi, Ings, Firmino, Coutinho, Lallana, New RW/LW (maybe x2)

There is a good amount of talent here but it's fucked up in terms of balance and systems we can play. I don't know how to solve it without wasting a lot of money.

Good summary, but I don't know why so many posters seems to be questioning Henderson's status in the team. OK, he's had an injury-ravaged season, but in previous seasons he's proven how good he can be, hasn't he? He was our best chance and assist creator in 2014-15 and that's a rare and precious combination when your best creator is also a superhuman energy freak who runs and presses more than anybody on the team. I believe the reports that Barca were sniffing around at one point, because any team in the world can use a player like that.

Talk of selling Hendo to accommodate a kid like Grujic, who is obviously very raw and not certain to adjust to England at all seem ludicrous to me. The captain deserves more respect.

I like Henderson, always have, but as you say, he's had an injury ravaged season and there have been fears that there is a long-term issue. We don't know for sure so can only speculate.

Our midfield really does need a shake up, it's not good enough and made up of players that are a little too samey.

Allen is the most natural casualty but if Henderson is fucked long-term and all we can expect going forward is more of the same than we need to evaluate his position.

Henderson would make way for a proper first teamer if that's what it came to and the Grujic thing was more about who we have as the extra squaddie for 20 appearances a season.

We need a far smaller squad next season. So sell or loan and easen the wage bill.
Make sure to give the youth more chnaces

I genuinely don't care who leaves. Not one going would bother m in the slightest.

I'm nearly of that mindset too.

I'd like to keep Can, Ojo and Countinho. Maybe Origi

Edit: I forgot Clyne. I'd keep him.

Not one? Wow, brutal.

Clyne? Sturridge? Surely that's two, at least.

Can?

You can't not like anyone

Clearly we aren't going to sell everyone. All I meant was that I wouldn't be bothered who leaves. I like a few of them, but not long ago I despised pretty much all of them for being so fucking brittle. And just as I started to warm a bit to some of them they go and pull a stunt like last week's second half. I'm not sure any bar Sturridge are genuinely the quality we need to get back to the top. Yeah, Clyne's not bad I suppose. But then I should probably accept we aint going there anyway.
