*Random cult hero alert*

I love how committed he is, he had a bad patch earlier in the season but is looking much better lately.

More than that though I live his attitude and commitment, watch his reaction to both of the penalty decisions. True Red, YNWA.

Can he be classed as a cult hero considering he's played the most games for us (besides Reina) this season?

I agree though, he's improved a lot after a woeful start. He still can't head though 😉

Nah, can't be having this.
He's not good enough and should be sold on.
He's clumsey, gives away silly fouls, picks up yellow cards, gets pushed off the ball etc etc
Sell, sell, sell.

Disagree.

Within the first five minutes today he could have given away a pen.
He jumped into a needless challenge and got booked.
He is not good enough to start regularly for a team with title aspirations.
Seems a decent skin, don't get me wrong. I just think Sunderland is more his level.

How dare you Stu?!

I think I've said it a few times, the players I like are always ones who are defined more by their attitude than ability (although of course ability helps), I love Skrtel's attitude

Someone please post vids of his reactions to the penalty decision

As i said, he seems a good lad.
I'm not criticising him personally, I just don't thin he is good enough for us long term.

Maybe not as a starter, bu I'd be more than happy with him in the squad.

I'd like to see us starting to try Carra and Kelly next year

Seconded.

Sometimes I like a player a bit and when others undermine that player I become fiercer in my defence of that player and before I know it, he becomes my favourite player. It's what happened with Spearing.

I hope you're happy Stu, thanks to you Skrtel is now my favourite player.

It did fill my heart with joy when he was swamped by the rest of the team after his goal the other week.

Showed some real togetherness.

I'd rather sell Agger and the Greek

Same here.

He's decent as a supporting defender if there's a strong leader beside him giving reminders and warnings. But he's not a strong leader or organizer himself, which relegates him to backup centreback level. Concentration and decision-making are certainly not his strengths, but when he's focused, he does a good job with his interceptions and on occasion, headed clearances.

We need leaders for starters at centreback; Skrtel can still have a role as a backup partner for one of the leaders when injuries / suspensions kick in.

Presumably it's the same with boxers? 😉

Great thread Anita. I hated the anti-Skrtel posts on here a few months ago. Yes he had a few dodgy matches but there were posters implying that he was an awful player and he's anything but that. He's a very good player and I have no problem with him being a regular starter.

Skrtel's got all the tools to be an excellent defender - and he often goes through this run of games where he's consistently excellent. At the same time, he'll let you down on a fair few occasions through the course of a season.

Given that tendency to be so shambolic at times, he shouldn't be a starting CB for us. Regardless, I'm pretty sure he'll always be remembered as a committed professional who always gave his bit in a red shirt.

You make it seem as if he's on the way out,Mish..I really doubt that; if anyone it's Agger who might be sold if someone will stump up the cash for glass.

No, maybe it came out like that. Meant to say that he's someone you can appreciate as he's always committed and capable of being an excellent defender at times. He's just not consistent enough. If Agger's fit, there's no question that he's the better defender.

Having said that, I think we should probably be replacing both.

Selling Agger would make more sense than selling Skrtel, as much as I like Dagger, he just can't be relied on, he's far too injury prone.

He elbowed Torres in the face. Give the man a contract for life.

Skrtel has been very impressive for the last four weeks or so.

I'm back in the sell Agger camp and I'm not moving!

Skrtel is a monster.

shipping him out before either Agger or the Greek would be madness.
