Well, the last pre-match / match thread I started went well (really). I'm on a one-game winning streak with lots of firsts for us this season:
- Lovren's first goal for the club in a competitive game
- Balotelli's first goal for the club in a domestic competition
- First time we won after falling behind
- First time an opponent got sent off (I think?)

So, let's double that winning streak this weekend. I think Borini did enough in the Swansea game to warrant another start in this game. He scored twice for Sunderland against Newcastle last season, so maybe he's got the hex over them. Henderson will be up for this game too since he's still a Sunderland fan.

Probably will field something like this, though I'm not certain that Rodgers will start all three of Borini, Manquillo and Coutinho. If Borini is in the squad, then I suspect Markovic will probably be the one who misses out (losing out to Can).

-------------------- Mignolet ------------------
Manquillo --- Skrtel -- Lovren --- Moreno
-------------------- Gerrard -------------------
-- Henderson -- Coutinho -- Sterling ----
--------------- Borini --- Balotelli ------------

Subs: Jones, Toure, Johnson, Can, Allen, Lallana, Lambert

-------------------- Mignolet ------------------
Glow--------- Skrtel -- Lovren --- Moreno
-------------------- Gerrard -------------------
-- Henderson ------------------Allen----------
-------------------- Sterling --------------------
--------------- Borini --- Balotelli ------------

I'd be happy for Lambert to play instead of Borini, or Sterling to play there and Lallana to take his place, save Coutinho for Madrid.

We need to get back in the habit of getting opposition players sent off against us. We used to be able to get five or so players sent off for tackling Xabi alone.

And Didi dishing out the yellow cards with his tumbles.

In my opinion Coutinho has to play, shaky start to the season but in the last few games, particulary last night he was Liverpool's bright spark. If were still having defensive problems, Toure should be giving a chance, he's not as mobile as Lovren and Skrtel but I'd fancy him to win a header over them two.
Thoughts?

My prediction, obviously not how I want us to start:

Johnson----Skrtel------Lovren-----Moreno

Gerrard ------- Henderson
------------ Allen
Lallana----------sterling
--------Balotelli

Coutinho should play, but I do hope he cuts down on the number of shots from outside the box.

Against Swansea we didn't look like a team at all with everyone except Markovic taking shots from everywhere.....Coutinho was the worst of the lot.

Markovic needs to shoot more and with confidence. His wayward attempt was a solid example of a player lacking conviction. I hope he is like Pires....takes his time, but eventually comes through.

I think Coutinho needs to play. Sterling is left with too much to do in his absence.

Ming, Johnson, Skrtel, Lovren, Moreno, Gerrard, Allen, Henderson, Coutinho, Sterling, Balotelli

I thought Lucas played well the other night. So here's a novel idea, why don't we play our one defensive midfielder in the defensive midfield position?

Fuck Henderson off, he's been pish for a month now. Play Lucas at DM, shift Gerrard to Hendo's role - closer to goal, closer to Balotelli and the attack. The only time we looked like scoring in last week's 0-0 was when Gerrad pushed forward in the last 30 minutes.

Who knows, maybe an actual defensive midfielder (i.e. not fucking Gerrard trying to be Pirlo) might help us stop conceding 18 goals every week too.

better you than me. I've been harping about Lucas for weeks now.
He was one of our best players against Swansea.

I'm on board, only because I'm in the "anyone but gerrard" camp for DM

I don't want to see Gerrard play there and I agree he should be further forward, I also agree that Hendo has been pants for a couple of games now. But here's another novel idea. Let's play the lad who's easing in well and helped us to our only clean sheet in living memory last weekend. Either that or yeah, just play Lucas.

I thought Toure did well too, he's always alot more composed than the other two, but you always feel an accident is around the corner. That said, Lovren is pissing accidents everywhere, so.

If Newcastle play like that against us we'll be in trouble. I could see us getting swamped. I'd play Lucas & Can together
the first 50 minutes with Gerrard further forward beside Sterling and Henderson all behind Mario.

Call it negative or whatever but the vitriol from their fans will be high, the players will be pumped after dumping City and Spurs in successive matches, we're struggling and the tempo from them will be manic.

Rodgers needs to play smart with this one - on 50 minutes he can change it up big time but expecting this current team to simply be able to match anything the opposition bring is clearly flawed at this point.

I like Toure but he's got a car crash of a moment waiting to burst into life every match. When it happens he doesn't even look confident of walking.

As mark says, Lovren is already making up the quota for disasters so maybe it's worth a change. At this point, though, Lovren and Skrtel are our first choice. What serves them best - giving one of them a break or constantly playing them?

We need our players to be up for this tempo wise. I would like to see Coutinho start with a clear understanding that he seems to fade around 60mins - i'd rather he had a quality 60 mins and made things happen than bring him on in last 20 when that might not be enough time to change a game.

Some big headaches though.
  • We need 2 up top
  • We can't afford passengers in the middle as Newcastle have pace and will be all over us (as all teams will be this season)
  • We have 2 attacking mids in good form - PC and AL
  • Sterling is our best player
  • Gerrard is undroppable

------------------Mignolet----------------
Manquillo---Skrtel---Lovren---Moreno
-------------------Can--------------------
-------------Hendo---Allen--------------
----------------Coutinho-----------------
----------Sterling--------Balotelli--------

If Sterling can be deployed as a striker I think this would be our best line up. Brodge played him there after subbing off Mario vs Real so atleast it isn't an unheard of position for him.

For me Can Allen and Hendo are all required to start to ensure we have players buzzing around in the middle.

In reality I think we'll see the same players but with Gerrard for Can or Allen and Sterling played wide and Mario isolated, again.

Geordies are in decent form, fair play, but I've a good feeling about this one.

3-1 Reds, and Sterling to run riot.

This confuses me a little. First you list Gerrard as undroppable to be a criteria for predicting the team - then you leave him out of your lineup.

Which is it?

He listed Gerrard being undroppable as a headache. The lineup he's drawn up is what he'd prefer to see, rather than a prediction of the team. That's how I read it anyway.

Missed out a line when I should have said "but, this is what i'd like to see"

I think Coutinho and Lallana are too in form (compared to other attackers) to be dropped and so that makes having 2 up top pretty tough.
