South Yorkshire police have said they will hold a “full and open” investigation after a 16-year-old boy sustained a head injury after apparently being struck by a police officer after a football match.

A video appearing to show a police officer hitting the boy with a baton was shared on social media after Sheffield Wednesday’s match against Barnsley on Saturday. The footage shows the boy bleeding from his head.

South Yorkshire police said a 16-year-old boy was taken to hospital in an ambulance after “sustaining a head injury from an officer’s baton”. They said an officer received injuries to his stomach and head for which he attended hospital.

Ch Supt Sarah Poolman, the match commander, said: “On Saturday 8 February, following the Barnsley v Sheffield Wednesday match, our officers responded to disorder outside the transport interchange [in Barnsley].

“A full, open investigation, including extended video footage, will take place to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the actions which led to a 16-year-old boy sustaining a head injury from an officer’s baton, and an officer being assaulted, sustaining injuries to his stomach and head.

“The 16-year-old boy was taken to hospital by ambulance. The police officer also attended hospital. Both of their injuries are not life-threatening.”

The incident has been referred by the police to the watchdog, the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

South Yorkshire’s assistant chief constable Lauren Poultney said: “We understand the public will have concerns about the content of a video circulating on social media, with a 16-year-old suffering injuries to his head. South Yorkshire police has referred this matter to the IOPC and we are waiting for their decision as to how this is progressed.

As part of the investigation into the wider disorder following the football match on Saturday 8 February, a full review of all available footage will be undertaken. The clip circulating on social media shows only a very brief period of time, and in order to understand the full context of the situation we would ask anyone who was a witness or has further footage of what took place to contact us. Until a decision is received from the IOPC, we will not be making any further comment.”

A spokesman for the IOPC said: “We have received a referral from South Yorkshire Police and will make a decision on the level of IOPC involvement in due course.”

South Yorkshire police said a 47-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency services worker and was released under investigation. It asked witnesses with any video footage of the incident to get in contact.

Sheffield Heeley MP and Shadow Policing Minister Louise Haigh said: “This video and incident has understandably caused deep public concern in Sheffield and the wider area. It is right in order to uphold public confidence, that the incident now be investigated entirely independently of South Yorkshire Police.”

47 yo man arrested for attacking emergency services, policeman assaulted and 16 YO boy bashed over the head with a truncheon.

None of it good.

I do wonder if or how these events are interlinked.

No but it's all heat of the moment stuff. What is less good is the pathetically dishonest whitewash being set up with the referral to the "independent" whatever.

The pictures of the aftermath are pretty grim. That officer used well over the top (not even excessive) force.

I hope he gets sacked. It was a complete loss of control from him, and if he gets away with it once, he'll think he can do it again.

There was no justification for running at the boy, then cracking him over the head from behind. He could have bundled him to the ground like a normal policeman.. or hit him in the legs.

The guy who attacked the Sheffield Wed. supporter.
How on earth can you watch that video & read that statement from South Yorkshire police come to that conclusion?

There's about five other officers there, do you think they'd not notice he's not really a policeman, or are they all pretending to be police as well?

Why would south Yorkshire police put out that statement instead of saying he wasn't an officer?

Why would they stay at the scene & try to treat the lads injury in an absolute state of panic when they'd seen the damage that he'd caused him?

How do you even get dressed in the morning?

It wasn't a conclusion, more of a hypothesis.

I didn't even watch the video tbh.

Brilliant how to heart you're taking this though, I love it.

I’m usually quite pro police, especially over here as i think they have a tough job, but he should be fired for that unless there is some context to that attack not shown in the video. I’m not even sure there’s any possible justification for that, that’s just a pumped up arsehole that knows he can get away with it.

Another time, another place that behaviour causes a lot of trouble.

Normally people videoing anything and everything gets my goat.
But then I see a sickening video like this that catches someone behaving at their worst.
Sadly that thug will get away with it virtually scot free, hopefully the young lad recovers well.
And the 47year old (his father) was possibly defending the lad.

Ive never see Jon Fox lose it before with anyone, but I think hes beginning to lose it with Bionerminalanal

It appears that the officer hit the young boy from behind. Unless that young boy was doing something dangerous I don't understand why such force was needed.
