Post Match Southampton (H) 2-1 - Tues 23rd Sept 20:00

Just got back from this. Chiesa, Ngumoha, Leoni, Robbo and Marma were comfortably the best players on the pitch. Frimpong was poor all night and Gomez looked rusty. Endo battled hard off the ball but was a complete liability with it.

The midfield was a mess in the first half, though Nyoni improved slightly after the break which helped it function a bit better.

Ekitikes red card make him look just as brainless as Nunez, unfortunately. Isak worked hard off the ball but he’s still a long way off full fitness, and someway short of what we really need from him.

Apart from one misplaced pass, Marma barely put a foot wrong. I can see why we signed him. Ngumoha didn’t win many of his duels with their full-back but he kept the ball well and showed a maturity beyond his age. Chiesa was the standout up front, on and off the ball.

Leoni was a beast for large parts of the game. He dominated the physical battles and showed good awareness. A few passes went astray, but for a debut in a new country he can be very pleased with himself. Hopefully the injury isn’t too serious, but it the level of treatment needed pitch side was concerning.

Leoni (who looked twice the player of Gomez on the night) could be out for the season and we lose our in form CF for a tough game to palace.

Not great outcome from the tie. The squad players looked pretty poor on the whole. Chiesa a bright spark and good to see Rio get minutes.

I rarely do ratings because it's effing tedious, but here goes:

Mama Cass 7 - Wasn't really tested imo. One or two good saves. What impressed me the most was his command of the box and his ability to claim crosses with ease.

Frim 5 - Dreadful in the first half. Misplaced pass after misplaced pass. Looked better in the second half when he was moved to the RW.
Leoni 8 - What a don! Only 18 years old, looked confident, didn't overcomplicate things. Don't think I saw him lose a single duel. One mistake though, didn't hold the line when Southampton got their chance that hit the bar.
Gomez 6 - I think people are being hard on Gomez. Yes, he's the one who misplaced the pass that lead to the corner that they scored from. But in all honesty we should have cleared that corner. I think he was decent, and he did save us a few times.
Robbo 6 - Decent performance and lovely pass to Chiesa. I think Robbo suffered a little from having an inexperienced Rio in front of him.

Endo 4 - Abysmal performance from him. Sure, he's a midfield destroyer, but what's the point of breaking up play only to sabotage us afterward with a poor pass? I'm sorry, but he was exposed yesterday.
Jones 5 - Cujo was OK, but the reason I'm giving him a "5" is because he's supposed to be better. It's all good and well to act like a big man while playing with Gravy and Macca next to you, but here was another chance for him to show that he can take on that responsibility and control the midfield himself. Instead he decided to play on a Championship level like his opponents.
Nyoni 5 - Did he even play? Was basically invisible. Can't really remember anything significant he did during the game.

Chiesa 9 - Like I said in a previous post, this was "a fuck you" performance. Easily our best player.
Isak 6 - Honestly, there's not much to say. He tried to make things happen but he barely got any service from the midfield and was isolated up front. Well taken goal though.
Rio 6 - His performance reminded me of a Swedish riddle: "What goes and goes but never reaches the door". I know, he's a kid and he's inexperienced, but he needs to pick his moments. Yeah it's enjoyable to see him take players on, but sometimes the best action is to pass it. He slowed us down several times yesterday in transition.

Subs:

Ekitike 6 - Brainfart. Would have been a lower score if his red card led to us losing or drawing. He did have some good moments in the game though.
Bradley 7 - Looked good.
Danns 6 - Worked his socks off
Kerkez 7 - Same and locked up the left side.

I thought Nyoni looked pretty good in the second half when he started seeing more of the ball after Jones was withdrawn. First half, it felt like Endo and Jones were weighing him down.
He just wasn't seeing much of the ball as Endo and Jones couldn't find him.

Agree with pretty much all of that except Gomez (and I'm a fan). He was horrific - despite a couple of highlight reel saves. He misplaced umpteen passes and was Southampton's main creative outlet.

He and Endo both 3s for me.

Jones really should have been the senior leading midfielder yesterday who got a grip of the game, but he just didn't. He's ok in the pockets and with initiating moves, but he just doesn't dominate at all. Yesterday he should have guided Nyoni, but because he couldn't have an impact, Nyoni looked a bit lost.

Slot made the right choice to bring the two young lads into the squad this season, they should be pushing some of the senior players for a place in the coming months.

Gomez and Frimpong were awful yesterday. I still think Frimpong will be the versatile right sided player who will play where and when situations dictate it. He'll cover Mo either from the bench or by shifting forward late in games, he'll be the more attack focused option instead of Bradley, but I think we have good options with him now there down that right handside, we have to get the balance right in defense though when he does play. And he needs to get fit.

Gomez was pants, but he does this, and then we'll need him against someone like City and he'll be the best player on the pitch.

The keeper is great, very composed, great reflexes, hopefully he's the true successor to Ali.

I agree with Squiggs about the kid, he couldn't get any change out of their right back, so he did the mature option and retained possession and was patient, that's really something.

Any news on Leoni?

And as if we didn't know it already, if we lose VVD, Konate or Gravenberch, we really are in trouble.

I thought Nyoni looked pretty good in the second half when he started seeing more of the ball after Jones was withdrawn. First half, it felt like Endo and Jones were weighing him down.

He looks very composed and matured whenever he plays, but I'd still have liked to seen him be more adventurous on the ball and with his passing, disappointing in that aspect as he's more than capable.

Rio struggled to really make his mark but I thought it was pretty interesting that Southampton had committed to doubling up on him from the first minute. At times he had like three covering defenders. He had a few unsuccessful attempts in the first few minutes but otherwise was quite judicious with his usage of the ball. Not much exciting attacking spark to go on last night but it was tough out there and the team as a whole wasn't exactly purring.

Endo was frustrating throughout the game - would continually yo-yo from really good play to really shit play. Seems like a good guy but this probably needs to be his last year at the club.

Jones - meh. Gomez - very poor.

Frimpong I'm struggling to understand as a player. His final ball isn't particularly great (which Leverkusen fans mentioned) but I'm hoping once the team starts to gel a bit more we can use his pace a bit more to get in behind and cut back into the box a la Walker for City in his prime.

All in all, standard disjointed shitty league cup performance.

Positives: Isak got a goal and we got the win

Negatives: Ekitike fucking us for Palace, Leoni doing his ACL or whatever it was and another failure to get a clean sheet

It was a very laboured performance and no clean sheet again! Only a couple of players have been exhaled, like the Keeper, Leoni looked a sound player, we have lost him now! I wish him to get well quickly, and the top of the pile is the best striker in the whole LFC squad. A world class player is Chiesa, and without him we would have lost the game easily!! The most senior player Gomez was a bad example for the younger players. If Slot ever considered getting rid of Chiesa! Then he is a very stupid manager by a mile!!
Ekitike is a pure idiot and the LFC should fine him heavily for his inept action. Slot's team needs urgent improvement.

Absolutely love seeing Chiesa shine.

I just hope if he and or Isak have to play now that they don’t get injured.

thats is the worst performance i have seen by a human being by Frimpong, oh my god he is bad

Bradley is seriously good when he comes on

You now realise why Endo is a squad player at best, how bad was he

can anyone explain how joe gomez 10 years later can still be so thick in defence and make a mistake every game?

chiesa is top draw, 10/10 effort, better than rio

ima big jones hater but compared to these guys hes maradona

Gomez plays what's in front of him and his awareness to who is around him is poor. That's why he always prone to mistakes. He is a good athlete but there are times where his superior physique couldn't bail him out. He is no longer as quick and as sharp as he was back when he was partnering Virgil. We have moved on and left him behind.

Ironically his injuries and versatility are what has kept him around till now. He could never stay fit enough for us to see how he is no longer good enough.
