[article]Everton duo Frank Lampard and Bill Kenwright have received an apology from Mike Riley following the mistakes made during their defeat to Man City.

Lampard blasted VAR official Chris Kavanagh for not doing “his job right” after his side’s 1-0 loss at Goodison Park.

Kavanagh did not advise Paul Tierney over a handball from Man City midfielder Rodri. Everton should have been awarded a late penalty for this incident.[/article]

No fucking shit - those fuckers are proper inept (trying to give them the benefit of the doubt).
Give them 2 months in the championship.

Mike Riley apologises to Everton for mistake in not spotting Rodri handball

Tue 1 Mar 2022 11.56 GMT

Referees’ chief Mike Riley has personally apologised to Frank Lampard for mistakes made in Everton’s defeat by Manchester City.

Lampard accused the VAR official Chris Kavanagh of being a “professional who cannot do his job right” after his team’s 1-0 loss to the Premier League champions at Goodison Park last Saturday.

Kavanagh failed to advise the referee, Paul Tierney, over a handball by Rodri which would have given Everton a late chance of a penalty equaliser.

Everton’s chief executive, Denise Barrett-Baxendale, wrote to the Premier League on Monday with the club’s concerns and demanded an apology.

It is understood Riley, managing director of Professional Game Match Officials Limited, subsequently called Everton’s manager and the club’s chairman, Bill Kenwright, to apologise for the mistakes made around the incident.

After the match Lampard said: “The decision is incredible and that loses us the opportunity to get what we deserved.”

I'm on my phone and couldn't be arse d to make it look nice

2 Seasons in the Championship… where they can practice on Everton.

That’s all well and good saying sorry. But VAR is meant to stop these mistakes. What good is sorry if this result impacts final positions for both clubs.
It's comparable to the other year when hawkeye failed, and Sheffield (?) werent given a goal.

If there is a chance that bias comes in from UK based refs, why don't we use overseas officials on VAR. It can be done remotely, why not either ship in a consistent set of people to do VAR from abroad or set up a VAR hub elsewhere.

It is almost impossible for UK people 'in the game' to avoid biases for certain teams. Easy to get rid of by finding those who have no connection to English clubs. I find it bemusing that it seems to be a rotating pool of people doing it - this brings in inconsistencies again. Have a set group of people who are in the VAR hub for every single game. Get them working together on each decision so that a consistent approach is taken. Its not fucking rocket science.

We could have a Eurovision style system. 31 refs with yes and no buttons with the decision going with the majority. Easy !

If we’re honest, Everton would have fucked up the penalty, Kepa style, so it didn’t really make any difference.

This is a very valid point, glad you've brought it up. If you want to maintain that we have the best league in the world then it also relates to the officiating, we should look at recruiting the best referees outside of the UK too

Bloody foreigners, comin’ over ‘ere and Reffin’ our games…. I DON’T THINK SO!!!!

What next… women refs!!!!

The good news: I saw in an article somewhere that specialist VAR referees will now be appointed and will concentrate on that aspect of officiating.

The bad news: the first one will be Lee Mason.

I get the idea, but I don’t think there is anyone that is truly objective.

I think the answer is accountability.

When a player plays badly, he is benched. When a coach does badly, he is fired.

I think refs need more accountability, including performance incentives for consistently doing well. This should not be a career to fear. It should be a career that is hard, but the best are rewarded like most other professions. And, the best need to be supported but not only the self-Interested referees associations, but by also clubs, managers and players. All want good refereeing.
