Is it just us old ‘uns that have an attachment to the 1-11 numbers or is any number ok?

I was just thinking that with 2 & 6 now free we could reassign to Trent (2) and Joe (6) to reflect their status.

Would help sell a few shirts too .... [emoji3064][emoji41]

I read somewhere that Trent wants to keep 66 for his whole career? I do prefer 1-11 numbers. but with Gini & Fabinho having 5 & 3 we are a bit muddled up!

I guess Fabs wants to take #6. Robbo has #3 at the National team, would make sense for him to get it.

I have no issues with someone having a squad number that’s not 1-11.

there have been many greats in the game that have wore 14, 17, 15, 20 for example and doesn’t mean just because a squad number between 1-11 becomes vacant should someone need to grasp at it.

Xabi, Hendo, Gerrard, Klavan, Crouchy, Cissokho...!

They would only do it on current shirts so I guess they need to announce numbers before shirts go on sale.

I used to love the fact that Ray Houghton rotated between 7.8 or 9 depending on which two of Rush, Beardsley or Aldridge were playing up front.

It should be

1. Allison
2. Alexander-Arnold
3. Robertson
4. Van Dijk
5. Gomez
6. Fabinho
7. Henderson (c)
8. Keita
9. Firmino
10. Mane
11. Salah

Obvs that will annoy Milner and Gini. But it's what it should be.

I'm in the camp of 4 being the DM and 6 being the CB but I have a Virgil 4 signed shirt so I don't want that to change.

Personally, I prefer Mbappe getting the number 7 as he's more in the ilk of swashbuckling attackers that we've had of past.

We were actually the first club to subvert (in the 70s) what had been the standard numbering system up till then. I never knew why but, whereas no.5 had always been worn by a CB (usually the bigger one who mostly dealt with the high balls), we started giving it to our left midfielders like Ray Kennedy and Ronnie Whelan.

Liverpool’s numbering has always been a bit all over the place. As you say, having number 5 as a midfielder was a bit strange, but we also famously had forwards wearing number 7 (when traditionally it would be 9 and 10), central midfielders wearing 11, forwards wearing 8, full backs wearing 4 and centre backs wearing 2.

I always assumed there was just a few personal preferences which then led to others taking unusual shirts and then developing their own personal preferences for them, then other players just taking what was available.

The most bizarre I recall was seeing Ronny Rosenthal playing up front wearing the number 3 shirt. I imagine he was just happy to be playing and didn’t much care which number he had.
