Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has admitted he could leave the club in the summer if he is not offered a new deal.

The Reds skipper, who is closing in on 700 appearances in all competitions for the Anfield club, will be out of contract at the end of the season and says that talks over an extension have yet to begin.
He told the Daily Mail: "I'm only contracted until May. As it stands, I'm here until the end of the season and want to make the most of it.

"I certainly won't be retiring this summer. I will play beyond this season.

"We'll have to wait and see if that's at Liverpool or some where else.

"That's Liverpool's decision. If they don't come then I will see what's out there."

I wouldn't be disappointed to see him move on at the end of the season from a footballing point of view. He doesn't offer enough anymore to be an automatic starter

I think he will get another year but it should be at a dramatically reduced salary given is performances no longer merit that. If hes willing to take a pay cut and be a senior player in the squad with reduced playing time then all for it, but for his current performance level he is being massively overpaid

It would be a blow for the club if he played for someone else. 1 more year then Hendo skipper

Yes, given his background and history he should be offered nothing but stark choices. He's brought it on himself.

It's a bit unseemly if a club legend like him has to resort to this sort of ploy to speed up contract talks. Maybe an American club has offered him a great deal to spend a year over there.

I'd prefer to see him go than have him on the bench or regularly out of the squad altogether. And if he's still a starter in the side next season then we really will be in bad shape.

Is he still represented by the same agent(s) who tried so hard to get him to jump ship to the Chavs?

Gerrard leaving the club would be a massive blow, sure he might not be the best player in the squad anymore, but he's a massive figure and leader around the club, don't underestimate the worth of that.

There's two sides to that coin...as strong a presence as that can be counter-productive. Henderson will truly flourish when he steps out of Gerrard's shadow.

He probably will, I feel it's a season too early for Henderson though.

Not sure about "most", besides which it makes a difference that Stevie's actually a Scouser. Mystic has a good point IMO.

As much as it loathes me in many ways, the 'commercial' impact of Gerrard is equally, perhaps even more so, as important as his on the pitch contribution to the club as a whole.

There's no way that will escape the notice (or the cold hard calculations) of the owners.

The ideal situation would be for Stevie to understand he won't be playing as many games but will see out his career as a one club legend instead of moving his family halfway round the world for one year.

If Henderson needs a club legend to leave who is getting towards retirement then it doesn't bode well for Henderson as a future leader for LFC, which he isn't anyway I don't think. There's a simple reason why Gerrard plays every minute of every PL Game, because we have no one else at the club currently to step up. Does anyone really feel that dropping Gerrard would address the current side's short coming, would we concede any less? Score any more? Control the midfield ? I really don't see it. Midfield needs major investment next summer.

Most Liverpool legends finished their careers in other clubs.

That's all this week from 'Tell Me Something I Don't Know'. Next week, I'll be explaining to you where New Brighton is - here's a teaser: it's not near Brighton - and there will be a little revelation about Brendan's teeth...

It's just him and his agent pushing for more dollar and the club to get a wiggle on, else he wouldn't be doing this in public.
As to him leaving, I wouldn't be averse to him moving abroad at the end of the season, would be good for him.

He'll go where his miserable wife tells him to go, which is wherever the most over-priced fashion shops are.

'Arry Redknapp is a bit slow by his standards to respond to this 'triffic' news. I would've thought he'd already be on cue outside the training ground, saying what a great player Stevie is and how he'd definitely be interested in bringing him to the club, 'but he's not our player at the moment so, y'know, I can't really talk abaht it'.

He'll sign a 12 month extension then go to America then retire get his coaching badges and jump back on the liverpool payroll.

If he wants to finish his career with a year in the US I can understand that.
I hope he signs a new contract and finishes his career at Anfield though.

Either way I'll be sobbing the day he retires.

He won't sign for another English club.

He'll go to USA for a year IF he does leave Liverpool. I can see him retiring here just like Carragher did.
