Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard could miss start of season after injury recovery
Steven Gerrard, the Liverpool captain, is in a race to be fit for the start of the new season but says he is feeling "as good as ever".

Gerrard is currently undergoing a programme of rehabilitation - the club's physios have been working with him every day at his holiday home in Portugal - after groin surgery in March.

He said: "I've had time to get my body right, get my body strong. I'm still four or five weeks away from playing a game but I believe I'll come back in better physical condition than I've ever been."
"I want to come back with a bang, I want to have a big season," Gerrard said.
"It's been non-stop football for me since I started when I was 17. I've never had a period of more than four or five weeks out of the game, so it's been nice to rest mentally.

"You don't want to miss games but when you're watching them it gives you that edge, that buzz to get back."

It is has been the longest spell on the sidelines of his career but the England midfielder is confident he and Liverpool will feel the benefit when the new campaign kicks off in August.
"I'll come back hungry and hopefully there's a very productive season ahead for me," Gerrard added.
"I've had a rest mentally, my injury's coming on well and I can't wait for the season to start.
"There's still a lot of time for me to achieve bigger and better things. I'd like to finish my career with a few more trophies.
"I always look at the 35 marker. If I get there and I'm still involved with Liverpool I'll be delighted but at the moment I'm feeling as good as ever."

Although there is nothing of substance in the article to actually suggest Stevie will miss the start of the season his current injury woes are still a worry and I can't help but think back to the rumor that was posted last Spring that his career in football is probably finished

Gerrard's had 4-5 months off now and still he won't make pre-season? seems a bit strange that.

Hopefully he'll be fine in the long run. 😀

it say he is 4-5 weeks away from playing, so therefore there should be no issue in him missing the start of the season unless of course it is a big cover up..

sounded like a pretty bad injury, lets just hope that when he is back it wont permanently effect his game

I'm not worried by this. If anything I'm encouraged. He's been struggling with his groin for forever and the rest will only be beneficial. Something the club has been willing to overlook in the past and rush not just Stevie, but other players back before they had adequate time to heal. He'll be fine once he gets some games under his belt.

He said in an interview two weeks ago that when he got injured in training, his groin came away 98% from the bone.

The same interview he said the plan was to play in the last two or three pre season friendlies and be ready for the Sunderland match which I thought was worrying as I thought he would be fit for the start of pre season.

Hence why he told friends he was worried his career was over. Thankfully he didn't give his doctors enough credit.

I thought it was your good self who had previously expressed a fear that Stevie's career might be over. Sorry if I misremembered.

Or maybe... it really is, and everything's just a smoke screen so nobody knows we're desperate to find a replacement. Could explain the attempts to bring in Henderson, Adam, etc. to try and fill the numbers!

Aye, on so many levels.

It was me JJ, there was a rumour doing the rounds that his career was over (as Jon said), it had come from someone in his family apparently.

Hmmmm, maybe , just maybe they are not sure how the groin is going to stand up to the rigours of competitive football.
Groin injuries are notoriously difficult, to treat and recover from, as well as taking a long time to heal, and our Stevie is no spring chick these days and has suffered before.
I am starting to think we are trying to bring in one or two insurance policies here.
Don't like to sound like a Job's comforter, but it makes you think though doesn't it.

We should be looking to bring in more CM's anyways. For various reasons we can't rely on Stevie, Jay, Lucas and Henderson and still expect to get back in the top four.

Well let's face it, it'd be daft not, & besides, even if he comes back raring to go & fully fit, more strength in CM & young players desperate to come through never harmed any club.

Not really, we just need to start looking at replacing our aging players.

Sucks to see it, but thats the way it is I guess.. 🙁

Yeah it just facing up to the facts really.

Who knows maybe he'll produce a few more vintage seasons for us, but when you take into account his age and recent injury record, we'd be mad not to be covering our arses just in case.

He's had a long break, as long as he has ever had.
Our season will consist of 38 league games giving him (for most weeks) seven days rest between games. With 12 midfielders you'd think the other CM's will get games in the FA and CC. He'll be grand.
